| Lives for gear | from 1 studio owner to the next Ok after all the modern marvels, all the pc processing, the coolest plugins and blah blah blah, do you think your satisfied with your software of choice. Like Upgrading from version 3.0 to version say ummm 10 do you feel it really necessary, unless theirs visual changes, or better plugin support, you know the rest of the mumbo jumbo. Because im sitting here in front of this gear and realising what else is their on my daw software thats gonna be super spectacular to make me spend another 2-10 grand again. I guess im just bored and have too much time on my hands. |

| Well this is not such a stupid question to ask yourself. A new bit of kit always perks up the vibe and I expect all of us have sat with pride at some stage knowing we have bought into the latest and meanest machine possible. But there is the music too. There is the personal journey to create ideas and personal style. This will not come with any upgrade or preset selection as we all know...although a change of sounds can inspire they certainly wont teach one to hammer out a great song or mix or a better arrangement. There are some great people here and some great studios too and I can often lean slightly towards the bit of me that wants a really great room...it can be a little like window shopping to look at the studios many gearslutz own! But they will all tell you that it must not get in the way of the music and if we get bored and feel upgrades are the answer we are not actually being creative at all. Many top producers and writers upgrade through real need...not just because they can. Things are now at a point where the computers will not fall over when asked to do what we want and even on a very elderly system (such as mine) I really could put a very good track together with a little bouncing here and there. So I would say upgrades will go on and on and on...bigger and faster and running live and all the power and speed. But my problems have never been the gear and from my first attempts on my Teac 4 track to now I have been mesmorised by the recording process. But the music has to move too....only think of the music...the music...the music. Scruffy |
