Native Instruments Kore

I don't know if someone posted this thing or not.

The indexing thing isn't that interesting to me, but I'm sure some will find it useful.

What is kind of intruguing to me is this:

"KORE is a plug-in. KORE is a host.
Within a sequencer-based studio environment, KORE acts both as an audio host and as a plug-in. In its role as host, KORE unites all your NI and third party VST and AU instruments and effects into a single interface. It is then itself loaded into your sequencer as a VST, AU or RTAS plug-in, giving you a standard user interface, powerful database and instant, hands-on access to all your instruments and effects."

It remains to be seen how well it'll work, but interesting, maybe.

And all this has been done in a MUCH more affordable package, of which version 2 is about to be released. Go and check out www.xt-hq.com. A host, that is a plugin, which can open itself inside itself over and over again. Can you say power?

Cheers!

If kore can handle any plugin type, then would it function as a wrapper? Will it be able to load vst's into pro tools without the fxpansion software?

Edit: I just looked again on the NI site and it says this:

"This scenario deserves a closer look:
VST plug-ins are loaded into ProTools™ via KORE! Again, KORE bridges the gap – KORE is loaded via RTAS into ProTools™ and your VST plug-ins are running in KORE.

The same is true when using KORE in Logic™, Digital Performer™, Sonar™ or when wanting to use Audio Unit plug-ins in ProTools™ on a Mac OS X system*"

I wonder if it would have to be used as a plug-in within a host, or if it could stand alone? I've been looking into a program called Bidule, and from what others have said, by running seperate from your host (DP in my case) it frees up some CPU. I don't know if it's just because of the way core audio addresses RAM or what, but I've heard that Core Audio (or maybe it's digital performer) can only address 3.5 gb of RAM.

The NI site says that it can run as a standalone host but it makes no mention of rewire support, so I'm guessing that you won't be able to use it that way. The other thing that should be known is that when I added it to my cart at zzounds.com it said $500. I dunno, the controller is cool and everything but not $400 cooler than bidule.

The one thing that would really make it worth the price of admission is if it hosted RTAS plugs that you could open in VST and AU hosts. I'd love to be able to run McDSP plugs in Logic (unless it already is possible in which case please correct me and slap me upside the head).

This is what I'm thinking.

I guess I should admit that I don't exactly know exactly what it exactly is, but is seems like it'll do some things that I could really like.

I did some more browsing and this is my take on it. I see it doing four things.

1...It's an organizer (think itunes for plugins)

2...It will skin your plugin's gui so that it will fit in with the controller's design (this could be good or bad depending on how it's implimented and how the end user deals with change)

3...It will wrap your plugins giving you extended compatibility in some cases

4...It will also work as a standalone app

Other than the first two items and the hardware, you could get the same out of bidule+fxpansion for less than half the cost. They really need to give a real demo video for this cause for the longest time I couldn't figure out what Kore did exactly (and apparently I'm not the only one that felt this way)

KORE

KORE combines all your VST and Audio Unit plug-ins into one interface. You can find every sound or preset on your hard drive with either a google-like search or an i-tunes type search. The KORE controller has 8 touch-sensitive knobs which you can set to different parameters on your software. Plus, the most useful parameters are already pre-assigned if you own Native Instruments software or other plug-ins from Arturia, Korg, Spectrasonics, GMedia, Rob Papen, etc.

I think KORE will be liked for different reasons:

1) VST & AU host, plug-in, and wrapper.

2) Find sounds by typing what you want into the “google” search field.

3) Find sounds by specifying musical attributes (bass, analog, warm, stab, hip hop).

4) Instant control of plug-in parameters via easy access pages. It’s not necessary to dive into some of the more complex GUIs of each plug-in. Also, from the hardware, you can see which parameters are assigned to each knob. You can view all 8 assignments at once, or one at a time. You can scroll through easy access pages for every instrument from the hardware controller, and there’s no limit to the number of easy access pages you can create.

5) Create complex sounds by layering instruments and effects and saving the whole setup as a single KORESound.

6) KORESounds also allow you to transfer instrument and effect setups between ProTools, Logic, Cubase, Live, etc.

7) USB 2.0 24-bit audio/midi interface provides access to all software functions from the KORE controller.
