The first thing that I always did was to clone the hard drive and replace it with a 7200RPM drive, and boost the memory to the max.

Check out the Configuration that matches your operating system: (BlackViper.com)

Main Page - Process and Service wiki

You should find on the correct page a long list of Windows Services and whether or not they can be set to manual or disabled or left at automatic.

Just disable the internet and the virus software and you will probably be fine. I wouldn't do more than that unless I encountered a problem. I have an i5 with 4G RAM W7 64 bit and I use Norton 360. It has an option to put it to sleep until reboot, it works well. OTher than that I just go offline. I have everything set for manual updates except Norton, because I turn it off when I was the computer as a DAW. Windows updates are manual. It is an HP and I have the HP updater to run once a month, it checks everything and updates all my system drivers etc. When I was using XP I had to go into administrative tools and disable a whole list of processes and applications... not so with W7 64... just try the basics first. offline, no auto updates, and turn off your virus software. Remember to turn it back on and remember to check for windows updates in the control panel if you set them to manual.
I think you'll find that it will run just fine.

I did set it for Best Performance, turned off a the audio enhancements, gave priority to background services... I think that is all. I left Aero on and have talked to others who leave it on and have no trouble. Most of your trouble, if you have any, will be from not having a good enough interface with od enough drivers. The RME Babyface or Roland Octa-Capture are smooth operators. You can run into problems using software like X1 64 bit if you try to use older 32 bit plugins. Main thing, IMO, GOOD drivers, everything 64 bit, turn off the internet and the virus software... then you should be fine.

If you are not using a Pentium 200 MMX, you can just check the power scheme. All other tips are nonsense or might bring a whopping 2 seconds faster boot time.

Just disable the network adapter when you do music and you're fine. No special optimization necessary (or possible).

Ditto to the max! I got a Dell Xps L502x and read and followed EVERY W7 tip on EARTH! Eventually I reimaged the OS [W7 home premium x64] back to "First Use[Dell's thing because they dont give you the W7 disc]and just set the power plan to "High Performance" and "Min Processor state" to 100%.It NOW runs better than all the tweaking crap/turning stuff off, hell,I even did the "regedit tweak" of turning off core parking[making "Value min/Value max]by changing the text from 64 to 00 but it just ran worse as it was then "stuck" at 2.0GHz instead of using turbo to boost it to 2.9 as SONAR X1 producer constantly demands about 2.5/2.6GHZ as per their "requirements"[2.6GHz] Windows 7 is TOTALLY different to XP or Resistor[Vista]and runs great by doing all the "simple"stuff I mentioned. The only thing that would concern me is the fact your machine has a i5 instead of an i7 but supposedly most Daws/Plugs still run OK with the i5.I would definately "upgrade" the RAM,mine was 4GB stock, and I just got another 4GB stick for $55.Funny thing was a freind did the same thing[same size RAM increase] with his MBP and they convinced him the "Job" had to be done by them[apple] it cost him $250!!!!!!:facepalm Good Luck,Cheers RK.
