more problems with midi and protools

I am using an old style mbox running PT6.4, a pc with winxp, a midi controller, an edirol um-800 midi interface, a roland sh-32, yamaha mu80, and an mpc2000xl. I had everything set up to sequence with with mpc and I would just sync it to protools and record the audio. But now I want to be able to record my midi data directly into protools and be able to use it to sequnce everything and choose patches and whatnot. I tried searching everywhere and I cant figure out how to do this. On a mac with a newer version of PT I know that there is a midi studio setup where you connect everything virtually, but I am at a loss on my version. Any help or comment would be greatly appriciated.

Hi!
I am the opposite of a Mac guru, so...

You are on OS-X, right?
PT 6.4 did not have MIDI Studio setup, right?

OK- I am pretty sure you would need to connect your Edirol um-800, and then configure it via AMS (Apple Audio & MIDI Setup or something...). If you do not, then in PT 6.4, the ports and channels on the device will just appear as genericly named ports and channels. Not a big deal, but with AMS, you are able to configure things nicely (IMO)

Not sure about loading drivers in Mac-land, so check docs for your interface. I assume you need them?

Once you have it hooked up, fire up AMS (it is a Mac OS-X thing, NOT a PT thing). Then, simply setup each intrument you have attached to the Edirol, according to port (and channel). Save your setup in AMS, and then launch Pro Tools. You should now see each device (instrument, controller, etc) exactly as you set them up in AMS, in Pro Tools, for any MIDI track.

Be sure to Rec enable a MIDI track to have MIDI pass thru to a device, and be sur eto have "local" off on your main MIDI keyboard controller, or you will get echoing.

Thanks for the reply. I am actually using a PC with windows xp. I know how to set it up with a MAC but I am unsure about the setup using the PC because it doesn't have the ams that you are talking about. sorry for the confusion.

Ahhh...easy, but sad answer...

Install drivers for the Edirol.
Hook instruments/devices to the Edirol.
Write down what is plugged into what, and using what channel(s).

Walla! All set!

Yeah, without the MIDI Studio Setup utility in PT (first appeared in 6.7 i think?), you are stuck with the MIDI device's driver declarations for ports and channels. Essentially, this means that whatever the driver writer(s) decided to code for the "names" of the device, ports, and channels is what you will see in PT.

Yep, it sucks. Ver 6.7 (and later) has MIDI Studio Setup, which works (essentially) like the MIDI part of the Mac AMS utility. Once setup, you can then select MIDI ports (input and output) by device name- predefined list, based on MSS.
