Logic 7 users comments please

I am currently running Logic 7.1 on 10.3.9. My system is pretty stable. Very few problems. Here is what I have.

Dual processor G5 2.0 with 3.5gigs of RAM/10k SATA(audio)/Lacie external(samples)
RME Fireface 800
NI Akoustik
DFH 2
BFD
Spectrasonics Stlus RMX/Trilogy/Atmosphere
UAD1
Waves Gold

I have not upgraded to Tiger(and I own it) because of my workload and because everything has been working really well.

My questions

Will I see any major performance boost by upgrading to Logic 7.2/10.4.5?

Is anyone here still on 10.3.9?

If I do upgrade will an archive and install be sufficient or will I need a clean install?

Thanks in advance for comments!

Well, I have a question for YOU! Our setups are very similar, but I find that using the UAD card immediately kills my performance. 3 or 4 Fairchilds and I start to cough. I suspect that my machine model is an early, early one with the AMD problem. When I bought it, it had Jaguar installed on it. Do you know what model you have? Are you able to make it really swing?

I am on Tiger now. It works about the same for me. I wouldn't expect any better performance out of it. If you do decide to go to Tiger, I would do a fresh install of everything. I regret not doing that myself, and I'm going to have to do it soon. PITA.
I think upgrading system on top of system is a bad idea, especially when the OS is getting so bloated with widgets, bells and whistles.

I plan to wait for the Quad MacIntel. Turn off every non essential device. Never put it online, streamline, streamline.

I have the first gen G5 with PCIX slots. I am only able to take advantage of about 75% of what the card is capable of but these plugs are so good I don't regret buying the card. The good news is you can freeze these plugs now where before you couldn't.

I remember one mix I had 5 or 6 1176's, a couple of LA2A's and a couple of Pultecs before I reached my limit. Maybe a couple of others too.

Here is a link you can check out discussing this issue. Do a search and you will find more...

Thanks for your input on Tiger.

Hi,
I use a dual 1.8 (first gen) with 2 mb ram and 2uad's.
I can firmly state that the combination of 10.4.5 and Logic 7.2 is the most stable mac system I've had in years. Crashes had became really really rare. BUT, I don't use many instruments, especially not the heavy sample machines. I use mainly Logic's plugs, waves', UAD's and some others.

I don't think moving to tiger will give you more performance, but you can expect more stability.
About UAD: I have to cards and I can't reach more than 79-80% on both of them. But mixing mostly in 44.1khz, doing a lot of bus processing and using native plugs, I don't need any more UAD power.

If your system is running great, with no problems there's really no urgency to upgrade.

Personally I had some annoying problems that were fixed after upgrading to 10.4.5 and 7.2. However, they were only fixed completely after trashing all sound & Logic preferences, removing a faulty old PAS, installing new PAS, and making a completely new Autoload.

But now things are running perfectly.

Also upgraded Waves to version 5.2.

Be aware that third party plug-ins need to be written/converted as Univesal Binaries before you can run them on an Intel Mac.

You're not seeing me switching to Intel Macs for the next 2 years.

Yes me too, I think 2 years is enough for the first vanguard of Macintel Universal Binary 'guinea pigs' to test the new system - I have just had a heck of a time updating to OSX 10.4.5 and Logic 7.2.

I will try to squeeze every drop out of my Dual 2G and in 2008 hope to make a graceful transition to what I hope is a beautifully powerful, smooth, stable and screamingly fast macintel Beast.
