Yecch, man, don't go for the ugly silver Fortress, let alone one built by a cable slob. But you go right ahead and lust that huge Mac Pro case that has a whopping 4 HD bays. If I get time and am bored, I'll shoot some pics of my Fortress. It's a functional beauty. Maybe your idea of a cool PC case is that huge Thermaltake POS:

And this CoolerMaster is a bit more Apple-ish:

It is funky. The first one I saw on the shelf at Micro Center had sloppy hinges, etc., but a friend of mine built one of the newer ones with the red highlights and it's pretty trick. I still have and old Thermaltake steel Armor and it's a fricken tank but is very well made. Not pretty, but built to take abuse. And huge. It has something like 9 HD bays and three optical bays.

I do love the MBP cases. They put PC laptop cases to shame.

I have the new style 13" but Core2Duo (just before the newest ones came out). It handles a lot of stuff, Logic sessions get to a certain size with a few instances of Massive and they start to get a bit too much for it. You can quit everything else and switch off your WiFi and that helps a bit

I really want the mac book pro. Just pro tools and stuff running through it. It would be great for me too since inspiration strikes me at the most RANDOM moments lol

I picked up a 15 inch quad i7, back in march.

I really haven't stressed it yet, don't know if I can.

It chews through the sessions from my current CD, no sweat.

No problems with logic demo songs that used to bring my dual core mini to it's knees.

An iMac should be just fine for most people. If you run large instrument libraries, or high track counts, you might have issues due to limited busses. Of course, thunderbolt could be the fix to this. Processor wise, they're more powerful than some previous mac pro generations.

Yeah,

I run a 2011 17" MBP 2.2 with SSD and it runs silent, never gets hot and handles every PT9 session I throw at it .

You can down grade to Snow Leopard but you'll need the fulfillment(restore) disks that came with that model before lion. It's a special version of osx 10.6.6 that has the drivers for the thunderbolt mbp.

Just call up applecare and they'll send them out to you and walk you through downgrading. I couldn't wait so did it myself the difficult way

Is this really necessary? I noticed in System Profiler on my 2007 MBP running 10.6.8. that Thunderbolt is listed under Hardware.

Problem is retail Snow Leopard disks are 10.6.3 which is too low to install on 2011 macs, won't have the right drivers.

You'd have to install the retail 10.6.3 then update to the latest version using another older mac to boot to the hard drive. I had to remove my internal hard drive and use an external enclosure. Total pain in the ass.

Much easier to just get the proper disks and use target disk mode make a Snow Leopard partition.

While the 13 inch is a great machine and super-portable, it's very different processor-wise from the 15. I had the maxed out 13 with the dual-core i7 and now have the 15. The 15 has A LOT more processing power.

I don't need nothing crazy. I will be running pro tools strictly. I think a mac book pro 13" can handle it. Anyone with a mac book pro 13"?

13-inch: 2.3 GHz
2.3GHz dual-core
Intel Core i5
4GB 1333MHz
320GB 5400-rpm1
Intel HD Graphics 3000
Built-in battery (7 hours)

You'll appreciate the quad-core, bigger chassis and GPU of a 15" as they run cooler than the 13's.

Thanks for the explanation, although I must admit I don't fully understand it. Are you saying that upgrading to 10.6.8 directly with a new Mac does not install all necessary drivers, but upgrading from an old Mac would? What exactly do you mean by "boot to the hard drive"? Cheers.

I would definitely got iMac on this one. Quad core, better graphics (not really needed on an audio system but why not) For the price of a mini + display I say the iMac just makes more sense.

If you get a new mac it'll come with 10.7, the easiest way to roll back to 10.6.8 is to get the MBP install disks from apple. If you complain they'll send you them. Easy Peezy.

If you just buy Snow Leopard from the shops (10.6.3) it won't have the right drivers to even start up. You won't be able to upgrade at this point without using an old computer that will run with this version of SL.

With an older mac you can tell it to ignore it's own hard drive and treat your external (the one you just put the retail SL on) as it's own boot drive.

So the older mac will start up from the external -the hard drive from your new mac, that you just installed retail SL on- Now you can upgrade to 10.6.8 using the older mac.

At this point the hard drive will have 10.6.8 and the right drivers to let the new MBP start up. Put it back in and it'll start up fine.
