Converters & Firewire

It looks like a number of AD/DA converter companies have or are coming out with racks of say 8 converters that can connect to a computer via firewire. Is this for real? Can a box with 8 glorious AD/DA converts send on 8 tracks at 96K simultaneously? If the anwer is yes how many 8 channel boxes can be connected to a computer at one time, and actually work with stability?

I think at 96k you can send 24in and 24out. That is 48 total. 96 total at 44.1/48k. Not totally sure.. someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

We've done tests with three Prism ADA-8XR on firewire @ 96k running Logic and been fine. i.e. 24i/24o.
