I have a pretty jaded and cynical view of songwriting contests, mostly because almost all of them have an entry fee, often a fairly hefty one. (Of course, it's gong to cost Contest X $35 to get some poor intern to listen to the first 10 seconds of your song. Uh huh.)

But I note that this apparently has no entrance fee with no purchase necessary. That's refreshing.

Apparently what the company gets out of it is a sort of YouTube flash mob of entrants' songs running 'under' the video of the commercial.

Entrants are required to upload copies of the commercial with their song as the soundtrack to the commercial. This will, I'm sure the company hopes, provide an explosion of people uploading the visuals of the vid (along with their music, of course, which is likey to just be considered gravy... the real payload is the presumed thousands of vids of the commercial being uploaded by different YT members).

Pretty clever, I have to admit.

Looks like the "judges prize" is not based on views and that's the one that gives the new computer. Count me in, seems like fun either way. It will be interesting actually to see (hear) how different people interpret the visuals with music.

I think I've got a few ideas for this. Anyone got any samples of a vomiting cow?

"Remember Ye Olde Sweete Shoppe? Luckily, after losing all our baby teeth to sugary, chemically-coloured snacks, we all grew up so there's no feckin' way we're gonna touch that neuro shit.

[cue vomiting cow]

THE END

Only $5000 for a 60 sec. clip?

Some years ago I did commercial tunes like that every now and then, and was in general paid lots more than that (and that was most often for 30 sec. clips!)...!

Find someone in your network who's a freelance project manager in the ad-agency business... that's how I got into that. I don't do these things anymore though, as I cant live with having to create music for a living, it turns me off completely and I get depressed in the end, sounds spoiled to say so but I've been down that road so many times in my life, and every time I cross the line and start to feel "pressure" to create, I lock up and my brain boils.

Worth a shot, I guess. Here's what my friend and I submitted:

‪Drink Neuro Candy Shop Song‬‏ - YouTube

Not into promoting a product I've never tried before (and don't intend to) but I like the idea of trying to match music with visuals. Nice change of pace from doing just music.
