Question Need 24 bit stereo digital I/O for macmini

USB? firewire?

I have no idea... i assume something USB will work.. but what's bulletproof and moronproof and works reasonably well with Ableton Live 4/5, a macmini, and a Benchmark DAC-1???

AES I/O on an XLR pair would be perfect...

ideas??

to clarify, this is an old skool mac mini... stone wagon with square wheels, as it were.

hell.. at this point it looks like i'll just pick up a new mbox2 on ebay for 4 bills and be done with it... at least i can run LE 7 and dont need a midi interface..

Afaik, a simple AES/EBU Firewire-interface is THE hole in the market. many ppl have been asking about one, but no company seems to offer it yet.

Absolutely. Unless you spend the extra on a MOTU traveller. But thats not the answer. There are tons of cheap firewire s/pdif interfaces; what about using an s/pdif to AES/EBU convertor with one of those - would that work?

In general you can connect AES/EBU stuff to spdif yes, mostly works without problems.
You know of any pure spdif interfaces? Most are like 2 analog I/O (with mic pre-amps), spdif I/O and Midi I/O. You'd be paying for rather some features that aren't needed.

I truly think that the first company that makes simple Firewire to AES/EBU (doesn't even have to be breakoutbox, just some "convertor-cable") interface is gonna sell loads of those.

What about 3 models?
Model A: Firewire to 2 (stereo: single XLR input, single XLR ouput) AES I/O
Model B: Firewire to 8 (4 stereo: 4 XLR input, 4 XLR output) AES I/O
Model C: Firewire to 16 (8 stereo: 8 XLR input, 8 XLR output) AES I/O

Ah, well, one can dream

Maybe its because most developers of interfaces also make ADDA convertors and don't want to encourage use of third party stuff. e.g. MOTU PCI-424 keeps people MOTU, Apogee Symphony keeps people Apogee. But when you look at the conceptual success of the Lynx AES-16, there's no reason why a firewire product couldn't do the same, especially in this pci-e transition stage we're going through.
