How much juice can i get out of this g3 laptop...

I've been offered a g3 laptop (iBook) at a very silly price

It's 600mhz

I want to use Logic Audio on it

Any ideas on the track count/juice factor/blah blah blah???

Thanks

Bev

Bev,
Running OSX you'll get around 16 tracks audio (reliably), maybe 7 to 8 exs24's.... and 5 or 6 other logic plugs... though not platinumverbs of course.
So.. it'll be ok for abit of noodling in the hotel room but its not a 'serious' composition tool like a fast Powerbook.

Any help?

Al.

Cheers mate, that did help a lot
I'm wondering if I need a noodling machine which doesn't let me go too far into the production or a cool powerbook which lets me go too far!

I'd go for the latter - asthmatic sessions aren't much fun.

I have had 18 STEREO tracks running on my iBook 600, in Logic Gold, under OSX through the headphone output, at 128 samples. 12 plugs, two of those Goldverbs, and still with grunt to go. Slightly more power available in OS9 running my Mbox and the Propagamma driver. ALL off the internal hard drive too. Pretty neat huh? As far as VSTi's go, EXS is great, can run heaps of them, but automation and filters can drag your performance down quickly.

I use my iBook like 24 track tape. All off the internal drive, when I fill my tracks (and believe me it will still be playing back fine) I bounce down. It keeps me from adding tracks for the sake of adding them. The only downside? My iBook is white, and my Oxygen8 is silver, so perhaps I should get that Powerbook for aesthetic reasons...

doesnt the freeze funtion in Logic 6 free you up enormously? I woulda thought that woulda been v usefull. The white Ibooks are bulletproof IMHO - I've dropped mine quite a few times.....!!!!

Well, if you can run 18 stereo tracks but nothing else

That means you may be able to run 10 EXS24 and nothing else

Each time you freeze an EXS24 track you lose an audio track

EXS24 is more CPU intensive than playing an audio track. but then with only 18 audio tracks, 'freeing up' EXS24 using freeze is freeing them up into a not very free place ie Audio tracks with a max of 18

I wonder what the magic numbers are

etc

Keep in mind that it was 18 STEREO tracks, with the CPU meter reading between 50/65%, while running a bunch of Logic plugs. I probably could have added a few EXS's too, tee hee. Needless to say I have been extremely happy with the performance of my machine. Average track count would be around 12-18 mono tracks at once, and maybe twenty plugs, with an EXS or two still running. Plenty if your previous computer was a Pentium3 450mhz. It also fits into a back pack. Double tee hee!

As far as voices of EXS goes, I wouldn't really know. My autoload starts with 24 audio tracks, and 4 EXS tracks. When I have 4 EXS (or other synths) running I start bouncing, which forces me to commit. I am known to tweak endlessly. The important thing is that it is a rock soild system, and handles lots of music before it craps out. It's completely silent, and my girlfriend doesn't mind it being left on the coffee table. A win-win situation!
