Thread Starter | Burning cd's
What software and burner are you guys using to burn your cd's? I've been using iTunes and the apple burner in my mac G5 and I've noticed on a couple cd's there have been some artifacts after burning. Do you think it's iTunes or the burner? I'm burning at 2x. Also, could you guys suggest a burning software. I do all of my final "mastering" in Pro Tools but need something to arrange the tracks, lead-ins/seconds of silence at end of tracks. Thanks guys! |

You can write the final AIFF or WAV file right out of PT then burn it to CD using any burning software you have. The qality of the drive, the speed of the drive make a difference, however. Professional Mastering Engineers will be very choosy about what media they use and also run the pre-master (the one going to the mastering house) through a set of tests that makes sure there are no errors. If your burning a hot mix, you might get some problems on consumer burners or marginal media. The last batch of Maxell media I tried to use introduced what can only be described as tape hiss... Consistently on the first of 5 disks I tried. Needless to say, they went back to the store. I gave up on trusting my computer for this and send everything through my Masterlink ML9600. This unit has a few advantages as a burning solution as well as storing a lot of projects and making backup files. I can go in digitally or analog. If I go in analog, I can record from a 96khz/24bit session straight into the Masterlink set at 44.1khz/16bit. No need for dithering because of the D/A => A/D conversion. I can go in digitally for backups at the original sample/bit rate. If you're going to make CD on consumer media and burners, I suggest you make sure you have at least 1dbfs headroom MINIMUM available in your digital file. |

Thanks, I'll check more into the Masterlink. Does it come with software to organize the tracks? If not, could you suggest some software to check out

No software required. It has a remote control that comes with it. The manual is a relatively quick read. It has a lot of internal bells and whistles you don't need and are not recommended as long as you have a DAW that you can do all this in anyway. I record an entire mastered session into the Masterlink and simply trim the songs to length in the Masterlink. I recall the session I want and hit the Create Redbook CD on the front panel. It's that simple. It also supports zero pause between songs so you can fade from one to the other without hickups. To make backups of the files, Masterlink has a backup feature that will save digital files to a CD that are in the same format as it was recorded in AIFF format. What it doesn't do is put CD titles on your media player. This is not a Redbook CD feature. Here's a link to someone selling theirs for $500- on the DUC |

I'm using Pro Tools LE on a Mac G5 running 10.4.5. Can someone suggest some burning software? I don't really need any of these "mastering" programs that have all these fx and editing options. I just want something where I can: arrange the tracks, trim off the start-time/outro, be able to fade between tracks, and write the song names for each track info. |

Hi there, Sorry to beat a dead horse, but I have a problem burning CD's. I always seem to get clicks on my discs when burning from Waveburner. Would this be a problem with the discs or would it be my burner? Thanks in advance for any help you could give me EDIT: If it helps anyone, I'm burning at 8x speed, purely because that's the lowest speed that it will let me burn at.

I've had troubles with clicks between tracks in the past using Waveburner as well, and have found that it was directly connected to the SCMS settings. This setting defaults to "protected original"... switching these settings to "free" for each track will typically fix the problem. I hope this helps!

| Me, too. I've used a lot of different things over the years, I'm in the Magix camp now.

For another inexpensive alternative, check out Bias Peak LE, or it's more expensive big brothers, Peak 7 Studio, and Peak 7 Studio XT.
