worried about processing power w/002 rack

hi guys,

i'm using an amd 4200 with 2 gig ram and looking at a 002 rack.
know it's like how long is a piece of string but what will this pc be like with protools? ie - can handle say 15 tracks for a 3 minute song with some plugins etc?

i've got a mate with a mini mac that struggles with say 10 tracks with plugins.

just trying to get a general feel!

thanks

1st of all have you checked the compatability documents, if not go do it now
assuming everything is compatable your system will be fine.

realy what do you expect from a mac mini

I had a 002r and 15 tracks should be no problem at all........ With the type of machine(computer) you said you have..... Plug-ins however behave differently..... some are more cpu taxing as other are not.... Also ln pro tools you can set up fx channels and send your particular track at different levels to your effects as oppose to the many guys i've heard of trying to put 10 different effects on each individual track....... Hope that helps...

thanks for the replies guys. sorry i must clarify that i don't have the mac mini, i've got an amd 4200 with 2 gig ram and 3 hd's (80, 120 and 300 gig). i haven't got the 002 rack yet but was just checking that it'd work fine etc. sounds like it should be ok though. haven't really had much experience with protools so will have to suss out how intensive some of the plugins are etc (i've used sonar for the last coupla years!)

I constantly run up to 32 tracks on my Imac G5 with lots of plug ins. That machine, assuming its compatable, should be able to handle just about as much as you can throw at it, ofcourse besides the usual suspects like reverbs.

As others have suggested, once you get plugs into the equation, there's little proper comparative quantifying that can be done... (unless you also start specifying exactly what plugs are on what machine).

I could probably run 100 or more instances of some plugs but three or four instances of some convo reverbs would bring my little system whimpering to its knees.

Just remember once you got the sound with the plug you want, AudioSuite is your friend for saving processing power. Just AS the plug right to the track and you've saved yourself a boat load of cpu power, of course depending on what plug your using. Generally with eq's and compression I can use as many as I want, but once I start getting into reverbs is choke city. Never slowed me down though.

The AMD processors have been kickin' butt and taking names to boot.
An OO2 should perform perfecly. The sinlg eprocessor P4's have been a great disappointment due to the lack of hypertheading support. This has been resolved in PTLE v7. Go to the DUC and read up on it: Digidesign User Conference (DUC)
