Lightbulb Master Buss Limiter

This is for all Slutz.
What is your favorite Master Buss limiter plugin or outboard.
To use for sending your mixes to the mastering engineer?

Sometimes the band or the artist do not have the budget to send their work to a mastering studio. So one of the tools I prefer to use in such a situation is the Voxengo Elephant.

Don't limit if the tracks will be processed further (i.e. mastering)

If you're doing the mastering, try the free Endorphin. Lots of cool mastering tricks in that plugin, and it sounds really good!

Again, L2 is a limiter, the ME will be doing that. You will be working against yourself and him by making it harder to master, with potentially inferior results.

For light buss comp to mix into, I use the STC-8.

Yes, I know. Did you go to the link I just gave you? It's what you're looking for, and it's free.

Limiting is a mastering function, not something you want on the master bus in a mix. A mix should remain full of dynamics with headroom available for mastering.

You may want to limit or compress certain tracks for effect. I find L1 a great source limiter before effects. This introduces fewer artifacts. Compression too is used on individual tracks for effect mostly to play with the feel of an instrument. If all you are trying to do is 'limit' those few transients to get more headroom, you might compress the individual tracks GENTLY

If you're not trying to cram all your dynamics into the top 1db of your work in a mastering session, many limiters will give you great results. I have Maxim from Digidesign but that is a bear to get right. I also use Izotope Ozone 3 which has some great mastering capabilities. Ozone 3 is a very powerful plugin for the money including a very good limiter (still not as powerful L2 but very clean) and some very nice dithering control when you need it AND multiband compression. I haven't reached for my L2 since I installed Ozone 3. Try the fully functional demo from Izotope.

Life's to short for WUP, so I am never one to recommend Waves products. I have Waves' Platinum Bundle so I have done the comparisons.
I also do not work for Izotope and it took some time to sell me on their product.
I am now sold on Izotope and purchased their 64bit bundle which is a heck of deal for what you all that you get.

I dont have the l2 or l3, but i like it alot more on the masterbus than the l1, it seems to do less damage to me

L1 is pretty weak for overall limiting. It works much better on solo unprocessed instruments.
