Thread Starter | Upgrading to Cubase 6 32bit & Windows 7 64bit, any issues to watch out for?
Currently using SX3 on Windows XP. I bought Cubase 6 this past weekend with the GC discount (total was $415). Haven't even opened the box yet. I am upgrading to 6gb of triple channel memory from current 3gb. I know running 32bit Cubase under Win7 64bit still only allows the app to use 3gb but at least Windows won't be taking memory away from the app this way. I'll be running Cubase in 32bit since I have a ton of softsynths and plugins that are 32bit only. This whole install is going to go on a fresh 500gb drive and I was wondering about the plugins. All mine are paid for, believe it it's true, but I have a lot. I have the Komplete suite (got it when they ran it at $299), Z3ta+ (bought before Cakewalk bought it), a few ReFX plugins, Rhino 2, etc etc. I noticed they all seem to include their registration info under their registry keys. Does anyone know if I could make my upgrade quicker by simply exporting and importing the reg keys for these softwares once I install Windows 7? I am keeping my XP install, it's on a different drive as are the VST plugins, so if not it's not too big a deal since at least I won't have to reinstall all the plugins, just reactivate them. Or maybe I would need to on the one's that use a separate activator program. And the machine ID should still be the same since the hardware isn't changing correct? Lastly, everything I've read posted around the net seems to indicate everyone using 32bit Cubase under 64bit Windows is not having any issues, all have said it works perfectly. Are there any issues to be aware of? Rev. |

You can install C6 64 bit and check whether your plugins and audio interface work fine. You can test with Jbridge for the plugs that don't. If it is not satisfactory, you can always install the 32 bit version. They can coexcist.

If I remember correctly, with Komplete I just re-entered the serial when upgrading to Win7 on the same machine and didn't need to re-authorize. All my sound libraries are on an external so I just reinstalled the core software and entered the serial. Took 10 mins. I think with some of the Cakewalk VSTi's, you can only use either the 32 or 64bit. I know this was true of dimension pro, but not sure if the same applies to z3ta.

Thanks guys. I started the upgrade a couple of hours ago. Win7 didn't see the XP install on the other drive so I downloaded EasyBCD which worked wonderfully to fix my dual boot. All my drivers are installed in 64bit and I'm currently copying over the original drive contents. After I will install Cubase and see if importing the reg keys for the vst plugins works. If not I will just activate them like normal, will just take more time as some reg keys are in my old emails. Rev. |

Well, unfortunately so far it's been an utter nightmare! I was getting some bluescreens and total freeze ups but then my motherboard reported the problem upon one of the reboots as being the memory and it dumbed down the memory speed to 1066, down from 1333. This GSkill memory is rated for 1333 at 7-7-7-18 timings and I set everything properly, I'm an IT Tech for a living, and it just isn't stable. And not surprisingly there are a ton of bad reviews for this memory on NewEgg. I went with it because I was using the same GSkill set for a long time now but 3 x 1gb chips. So, at 1066 now and stable but I gotta RMA them. Then there was the Windows 7 virtual store. I'm new to Windows 7, I use Ubuntu at home for general PC use and XP so far for my DAW. When I would save a project in Cubase I couldn't find them where I saved them because apparently Windows 7 doesn't allow saving in the Program Files directory or something like that. It was storing them in a Virtual Store folder under my profile. So, I tried to uninstall Cubase but nope... kept getting Error 2203. So I had to wipe out the drive and start again. Now I have Cubase installed just under the root and everything is seeming fine now, knock on wood. Still working on it though copying over my files and then I will need to deal with reactivating all these darn VST's. Rev. |

Doesn't matter at this point. I'm going to sell my Cubase 6 as I don't like it nor do I like Windows 7. But that's not the main reason though, one of my most frequently used softsynths simply isn't seen by Cubase 6 for some reason. It works fine in SX3 and it's an old softsynth that isn't supported anymore, was written seemingly by one Japanese guy. If anyone wants to buy my Cubase 6 for $350 PM me. I'll post it up in the for sale section within another day or two. Rev. | |
