Has PT 9 on PC DAW changed the game like you thought?

So I am a a day into a 24 hour obsession research kick. In the time since i have started, I went from assuming i was going to make my first jump into a MAC to thinking about finding out more about reputable PC DAW builders.

I dont want the headache of designing a PC and going through the growing pains. And for the sake of learning pro tools, which I want to do because a GREAT studio I have an opportunity to work in and have my own sessions at, has Pro Tools setups with MACs.

My current PC is a Dimension e521(dual core)4gig ram and Im using the 1010LT. I started down the mpowered 7.4 Demo road but was getting an "access violation occurred." I dont want to purchase mpowered 8 and get the same (middle finger) when i try to run it on this PC. So i was in the market for a new PC when this studio opportunity came up.

(I know it's long winded but I want you to be able to comment)

So since then I found out PT9 is not dependent on the hardware anymore.

My first thoughts were,
1. "crap is PT getting worse cause it's trying to appeal to everyone."
2. "Will i be doing myself a dis-service if I jump ahead of what the studio is using?"
3. "Will learning PT9 have so many new features and layout changes that it wont really help me with my original intention(learn pro tools for studio opportunity)?"

So the appealing thing about the MACBOOK PRO /PT9 combo was the portability. As yet i dont need to be mobile, but as a sometimes on the go, dj/producer (abLETON), I found the macbookpro to be more stable and suitable. Also the learning my way around a MAC aspect.

I didnt like the loss of all my extensive PC experience(VST's) and dual monitor setup. Instead i was now trying to understand the DVi-VGA setups and worry of all the unforeseen issues i might run into, not to mention moola.

So i stepped back to re-evaluate. Now i stumbled upon concept of pre-built DAW's. Prior to that, yes, I would have gotten a off the shelf PC. Now I am only curious if the pre-built DAW I would get is well proven out with Pro Tools 9. In the end I think it's really interesting and wondering if enough time has passed to actually ask the question.

Has PT9 changed the game? Is a pre-built DAW PC with PT9 a solid platform? Any info out there on reputable well proven DAW builders? OR are there as many of those as opinions?

ok thanks for all the other info in threads and stuff this forum is awesome.

I have 3 grand of which I need to make the most of. Meaning I dont want to have to spend it all on this purchase, but im obviously entertaining it with real reservations.

I know I saw few people saying this move by PT9 would really signal in a new era.

update: WTF i looked around and there are plenty of PC daws that are equally as expensive if not more than the MAC......
WHat the hell i just want to get a good daw running PT9 and I have at least a grand.....too many freaking choices. Im at the point where ive studied too much and i better wait.

My 2 cents is that you can get an excellent computer DAW on either platform. With the same physical hardware a Mac will cost you more and give you slightly (about 15%) less power for running your DAW. But again... it's almost irrelevant with how much power is available.

I generally recommend for people that unless you already feel comfortable with both... don't switch. The time lost, and frustrations faced will decrease your productivity... when getting a new computer should increase it.

jmtc.

btw... Pro Tools 9 is running FABULOUSLY on my custom DAW's right now.. both Mac and PC.

PT9 runs great as long as you don't use digidesign hardware, which is quite amusing. The LE based interfaces have problems with the drivers: all of them.

As for the sw itself, is pretty neat, i love it, now let's hope they'll come out with the 64 version soon because the RAM limit starts to be a big problem.
Not really helpful to have a 64bit system than sees all your RAM but then PT uses 1/4 of it..

PT9 running perfectly on my Sonica-built PC. I installed Win7x64 for PT9 running with RME hardware. No problems at all. I also run VEPro outside of PT for VIs to take advantage of 64-bit and extra memory, along with slaves systems piped back into the RME.

If you prefer Macs and they make you feel warm and fuzzy, then stay that route. If you prefer a more pragmatic approach to price vs. performance/power, consider a Win7 PC. PT9 is a very good release of ProTools over all though.

This cross-platform plug-in-carrying-capacity benchmark of multiple DAWs, including PT9, may be of interest to you. Overall, PT comes out looking pretty good on either platform, within the confines of this form of testing, and with one or two minor provisos.

DAW Bench : DAW Performance Benchmarking

Interesting link, I wonder why/how different plugins give such different result..
Funny that the benchmark was done using RME, like I said, awesome, as long as you don't use Digi hw lol
RME cards rules tho', I'm using it with SSL Alpha and so far so good
