002 performs worse than 001 on the same machine. Why is this?

Digidesign says that G4 with speeds less than 800 Mhz will result in worse performance while using the 002/002r. I also read some threads on the DUC where people who exchanged the 001 to a 002r had worse performance on the very same sessions.
Can anybody explain why is that? Is it because it's Firewire, or does it have some processing overhead that the 001 doesn't have?

Please see my other reply re: OS9 vs OSX.
For proof.. check the Digi compatibilty docs for the Digi 002 Tabletop under OS9. Your 400mhz is supported....
