Best use of 4 hard drives

Hi,

OK, I now have 4 hard drives on my 2.5 dual G5 and I use Logic Pro 7.1.1.

1. OS: the one that came with my G5
2. Recording: 160 GB LaCie D2
3. Samples: 160 GB LaCie D2
4. Backup: 250GB LaCie D2

Pretty soon I'll need another one just for MP3's but for now they're on the OS drive.

Basically my question has two parts.

1. Should I keep all three on the FireWire 800 buss by daisy chaining? Or mix and match with the FW 400 buss? And if I mix and match what should go where? Or maybe I should get a second internal for one of these purposes and use one of the externals for MP3's???

2. Do you think I should move my samples to the new drive or my recordings? I have about two albums on my recording drive. The samples are DFH Superior (30GB) Ivory (40GB) Scarbee KGB (30GB.) Have you guys had any experience moving large sample collections to a different drive? I suppose moving the recordings would be pretty easy, but would Logic have a hard time finding them?

Thanks a lot!

Every time I have moved my audio or samples drive it becomes a nightmare re-visiting old projects. I always keep track of the paths and the new paths, and Cubase does a good job of tracking down audio for a project, but it does involve that extra process of 'search'. Eventually (by recording audio in the new position) things start to get lost or overwritten.

Thats been my experience, and there's nothing worse than loading up a quick drum kit patch and Kontakt then having to go and search 3 drives for the samples! Beware drive paths of sample patches!

So my advice, leave your audio and samples where they are and just add a new drive if necessary.

Looking at your setup, the drive you need to worry about least is your backup drive. Maybe move that onto the 400 bus (backup should be kept external definately). Get the biggest internal you can afford and use that for your MP3s. As long as you sort out your directories properly form the outset you can always use this drive for audio and samples as well
