Protools bus problems

HELP! I'm baffled with the busses in my protools system. (Protools 6.4, 888/24/io)

When I generate a signal from an aux input to another track via any Bus, the signal comes into that track with a drastic loss in db. (-14.5 db)

So I can generate a sine wave a 0db, bus it to another track and the max db in that track is -14.5 db.

I've used protools LE before and my experience tells me that if I bus a 0db signal into another track it comes into that track at the same levels.

So why is this TDM system seemingly screwed up?

where is the signal coming from? the signal generator plug opens @ -20 as I recall. If you're hitting your 888 with a tone generator then -14.5 would be about normal if your oscillator is putting out +4 that would show up as somewhere between -12 and -20 depending on how your 888 is calibrated.

If you're saying that you've got 0 on the aux (apple click the numerical value above the fader to toggle through fader position, meter level, and channel delay in samples) and then go out a bus at 0 and then get -14.5 into the other track something is indeed whacky.

pls elaborate

this is a well known problem with 6.4.1 mix on osx

its due to your sessions running at +12db fader gain!

You can either run all your sessions at +6 or immediately after loading the session just reset the playback engine (it works flicking to the other voices option from your current voice allocation and back again too if you dont want to mess with your dsp usage) I'm not sure if they're fixed this with later cs updates - maybe check the DUC to see if its been dealt with, tho I'm sure its waaaaaay down DIGIs list of things to do!!

Practically - its not really a PITA

Had the same problem with our MIX rig including the output of PT dropping that much. The only way we solved it was reselecting the 888 in the hardware setup (required session restart!). After resetting the hardware setup all the time for months and embarassing ourselves in front of the clients, we sold it and got HD. Expensive as hell but at least nobody's asking why we have to keep on resetting the hardware setup and disrupting session flow. Aggrevating. Digi was NO help. +12 faders were already integrated into our workflow. Wish we had known about the voice allocation thing. At least we don't have to work with 888s anymore. thumbsup

I have a similar system (PT 6.4.1, Mix|Plus system), and had a similar problem. Afterdownloading and installing PT6.4.1cs4, the problem is solved. Give it a try.
