kontakt midi and volume question

After i have chopped some samples in cubase, i then map them to individual keys in kontakt.

When i press my mouse (not keyboard) to audition the different sound of key on kontakt, a red dot appears vertical to the note.

Does this red dot above the keyboard note represent the midi volume or the volume of the actual sample the keyboard note is mapped to?

The reason i ask is that ALL the files that play really quietly quietly have a lower dot, BUT since i am playing the key's with my mouse, the red dot, can't really represent a midi value?

Therefore the height the red dot appears represents the actual value of the level of audio?

Can someone please explain this?

Note: I did not play anything through my midi keyboard, i'm just pressing the inidvidual keys on kontakt with my mouse.

It's a bit disconcerting.

It represents the velocity of the note you have just hit. hit it harder the dot moves up, hit it softer the dot moves down; corresponding to the 0 - 127 velocity values on the left hand side of the map editor.

Its used to tell which velocity layer you are triggering when you strike a key. For example you may have a piano sample with 2 velocity layers. 1 quiet and 1 .. loud on the same key. the dot tells you which sample you've just triggered.

ok thats what i thought, but if i am playing the samples with my mouse, the red dot appears at different levels (no midi involved)

i mapped these samples my self, and none are velocity layered

You mean you're clicking on the keyboard in Kontakt? Its still showing velocity. Move your mouse to the top of the key and you 'click' a higher velocity, move it to the bottom of a key and you 'click' a lower velocity.
