Kenny uses PTs in the video but... this is about mixing. It isn't about PTs, and his techniques easily translate for use on any DAW.

Perhaps already mentioned a few times but a minor thing:

Why is the lone snar sequence somewhere in the middle referred to as"Snare Shuffle"?
In my modest drummeropinion it's just straight 8's with standard accents. No triplet-based figures as far as I could see (listen).

I don't use protools, but wasn't bothered at all with it. Everything can be translated to the system you use. I just took a drink when I got to see the manual adjustement of delay compensation that has to be made in protools. Wow, that seems like a bitch. On the other hand, I wish my DAW had faders for the sends, looks nice. All DAW's have their pros and cons, but they are all similar enough for a video like this to be useful for anyone.

I liked the video a lot. Most of it were no shocking news, but it's always nice to watch someone else go through a mix. Either you learn a new thing or two, or if not, you get confirmation that what you already doing is the right thing. If nothing else, it's inspirational. I liked the fact that there was no bullshit involved, and the pace was fast and the subjects to the point. The automation was my favorite because that's where my skills were lacking.

I did however notice that most, if not all, panning was set to L-R or C, which would create what is usually referred to as big mono. I was surprised that the whole stereo field was not being used. I would love if Kenny could comment on that?

Hi!

I was just wondering if this tutorial would be also useful for electronic music mixing. I know there is a specific tutorial, and I given a try (from any streaming sites), but it didn't convince me. I'm looking for a tutorial that give me an idea when I should prefer a compressors over a limiter, when I should cut some frequencies and how panning tracks.

Thanks

Loving this video so far, Kenny don't listen to anyone you don't talk to fast, not once have I had to double back to catch anything you've said, in fact it's great to listen to someone "talk" to you and get to the point without being abrupt!

It's like watching a audio version of a Scorsese tutorial.

I've just purchased the video, and I think It's a great video.
Is someone here could explain me the "time align" function ?
Why Kenny during the drums mix always changed the number ?
I pretty much understand all the video but not very well "time align".

Are you talking about changing the amount of samples introduced by each track due to plugins?

If you have ADC (automatic delay compensation) then you don't have to worry about it. It does it for you.

I was doing it manually for those who don't have ADC.

I would delay all the relevant tracks to match each other.

So all the drums would be the same. Or all the bass tracks.

Anything that came from the same source.

Having the vocals off a few samples from the guitar shouldn't be noticeable enough to worry about IMHO.

Hope that helps.

Hey Kenny,

Every time I watch this I notice myself applying more and more techniques.

And they seem to be working very well at EVERYTHING I throw at it.

For instance, the bass distortion, the bass amp room, and the transient modulator for the room mics....they are really helping out a TON with some recent mixes. I'm confident in my abilities but your vid opens me up to using your approach with those plugins and it's been an eye opener.

I'm still trying to get my head around the VCA stuff...but I'm sure I'll be adding that to my mix setup soon.

Don't get too caught up in the VCA stuff. Truth be told, I only get that organized on really big sessions or when I have the time.

Thanks for the support.
