SSD are not supposed to be "natural sounding". The are supposed to be processed sounding. You need to get some perspective and give it a rest.

There are a lot of us who love SSD and think it would be improved if some dry, less processed snares were added in the update. Apparently this is what is happening, so I'm looking forward to it. The only reason I've been so adamant about this is because, for me, the rest of the program is such an awesome accomplishment.

I do a little bit of industrial/cyberpunk as well as straight up metal, so I am really looking forward to the electronica kit on offer.
It better be better than Toontrack Electronic EZX because that was garbage.
I was at NAMM and got to see some SSD presentations etc. When I got back, I basically sold all my Toontrack licences.
I'm probably the only one a little annoyed he is dropping Kontakt. Since I JUST got my head around it.

When is 4.0 supposed to be released? The SSD website hasn't been updated to even mention v4. The current SSD is a little inflexible since it's all so processed ... it will be nice to have additional unprocessed drum sounds to draw from |

We're workign hard on SSD4.. its gonna be great. It'll offer everything you would ever want in virtual drums.. more news soon. Original estimates were late spring but to be safe I'd say early summer.

a good video demo of the interface always tempts me into purchases.

Steve, Will you be contemplating doing kits (both natural and with preset processed options) for BFD2? or BFD3 when it comes out?

Hi.. SSD4 will be our own proprietary instrument and the only drum instrument our samples will be available for.
I don't think we'll be able to finish it by late June as we'd hoped, so it will most like see a September 1st release (its not a good idea to do a mid summer release).
I will be posting video and demos of many of the new kits.. With all the new kits including the jazz, vintage, and electronic kits.. combined with the old kits.. SSD4 will have over 100 preset kits in many styles, ambiences, and genres.
Stay tuned to this thread for some audio.

I may be wrong, it's only something that I've heard. Will you be deleting some?? Or keeping them intact???
I'm asking because I have some favorite SSD snares and kicks that I can't live without. |

Hey SS: Use him in the future for all grooves. |

I'm asking because I have some favorite SSD snares and kicks that I can't live without. | From 2.x to 3.x, there were some samples that didn't make the cut because I felt there were problems with them (one of them wasn't hitting the tape machine properly and was too hissy for example, another didn't have enough velocities to play properly..)
BUT, every sample from 3.5 WILL be included in the new SSD4, as well as tons more from the new batch. Quote:

For anybody looking to add CLA low end "donk" to the Slate snares,
checkout Truth Drum samples.
They sell an Awesome brass beauty snare for 10 bucks. Kontakt ready.
Layer this snare under an SSD snare, and smile.
This, at least until SSD 4.0 comes out.
Make no mistake though, i think SSD's are the best thing going.
You rock Steven!! I hope you cleaned those mics after the fart sessions.

TK | It is said that SSD 4.0 will include non-processed samples too, so I think it will be easier to get nice layered snare sounds.

TK | I can get it with Snare 13. But maybe we're not talking about the same "donk" |

Will SSD4 have an EX option that is $100 (or less), like there is for SSD3.5? I just decided I want to buy a virtual drum instrument and SSD3.5 EX is right in my budget range... but if SSD4 has an EX option I'd consider waiting til September to get the new version.

Keen! As for that low end "donk" everyone is talking about, usually its case of a low shelf / bell boost around 175Hz, with a cut at around 400? That seems to work for me on any of the "fatter" slate snares.

Any updates on this since? I am a very happy owner of SSD 3.5, and as someone living in Nashville where great sounding, raw musicianship and instrumentation are absolutely crucial, I can speak on behalf of a lot of producers by saying we're getting a little ancy!
I read through this whole post, saw some criticisms, and partially agree with some. I have made drum programming quite a sickening addiction, constantly striving for the realest most convincing sounding drum tracks/performance possible as I opperate as an independent producer, with limited space, and so long as you understand the craft of great drumming, and how to properly program drums with the velocity, swing and groove a great drummer would deliver, the only thing standing in the way is the sounds of the actual samples, and the realism of the delivery. To date, SSD has been the top of the heap for me in this department (with pretty detailed tweakingn of course.)
My biggest gripe with SSD 3.5 would definately have to be the cymbals/overheads/room mic situation. Listening to countless multitracks of great Nashville session drummers playing great sounding kits, the biggest thing missing from the digital drum realm is the energy, spacialness and flavor provided by multiple room mics/thicker crashes and rides, bleeding of certain drums into other microphones, and overall room vibe.
I have found SSD 3.5 to be very useable in my world of pop/rock/country recordings, primarily by starting with the Old Zep kit (which is most realistic to my ears) turning them down quite a bit and blending with the realist sounding kick/snare SSD has to offer, as well as some careful panning of room mics to add space, I have got myself a really, REALLY great sounding believable studio kit.
My hopes are that when 4.0 comes out, the primary focus is placed on user interface (multi/out/mixer) and realness, and believability of the kits themselves. Even with the best programming out there, you can only make it as real as it sounds.
Giant thanks to Steven Slate, it's been my best friend for sometime now, and 4.0 has got me more impatient than a kid on Christmas Eve!
Dan
