Need some help with Cubase SX3 !

I just bought SX3 with a Tascam FW1884 control surface and I think I must be missing something... I've only had it for 3 days but...

I loaded all setup discs with the 1884 and SX3. Followed instructions for installation.

Here's one simple thing I couldn't do: I recorded one track of guitar into channel 1 but I can only hear the left side. I tried to assign 2 tracks (VST Connections) from input 1 to channels 1 & 2 and it did record, but I can only hear the left side. How can I record a mono signal into 2 tracks and hear both ?

In the Roland VS2480, all I did was assign 2 chanels from the input mixer, ex. input one mono to channels 1 & 2. Play it back and I had 2 channels of guitar which I then panned. I couldn't do that today with the SX3. I know there's a way..

Also, none of the controls in the Tascam FW1884 are interfacing with Cubase. I mean, the leds light up and the trim pots work but the faders, transport controls etc... don't work. From SX3 software to the 1884 they don't work either.

I've tried everything but I don't know what else it could be that I missed.

Anybody knows how to get these 2 to work together ?
I'm sure these are only 2 of many questions I will have while I make this switch.

Thanks for your help...

Peace

Well I guess for starters why would you want to record a mono signal to two tracks? That doesn't make it stereo...though you could always copy the track after the fact. There probably is a way to do it but I'm just not sure why'd you'd actually want to do that. Do the pans work? Can you get signal out of both left & right outputs and confirm that it's not human error or a bad cable?

Anyway...I have a Tascam surface with SX3 and had to run the Tascam install twice before it all worked the way it was supposed to. IIRC there were two or three Trashcan applications and I installed them in the wrong order...ran an uninstall and then reinstalled in their recommend order and everything seemed to be OK after that. Also, I think the interface needs to be on BEFORE you launch the software. It might work the other way around but I dunno, I always power the room up & then launch SX3 as the last step. I'm also using Motu interfaces for audio so the Tascam is working as a control surface only.

All you need to make a record is a mic, some tape and maybe some bad reverb...

Hi Jay:

Thanks for answering my post. I just changed my whole studio from a Roland VS 2480 to the SX3 and FW1884, very different.

I posted that last week when I just got the gear and I finally got them working together, but I now have some bigger problems that I can't figure out... I'll share it with you and hopefully you can help...

I've been trying this chain all week and some weird things are going on, let me explain:

I ran my guitar into an Avalon 737sp XLR out to an Eventide H8000, then ADAT out into ADAT in on the FW1884. I was trying to record a stereo panned guitar signal into audio channels 1 & 2 of the SX3. So I did this... On the Inputs in the VST Connections window I assigned ADAT 1 & 2 as the Device Port from 2 Mono Buses. On the Output side I assigned a Stereo Out for monitoring. I set the clock signal on the SX3, Tascam and Eventide to 48hz.

Then, something weird happened... When I pressed any of the transport buttons on the Tascam or SX3 a loud beep almost broke my ear drums. I noticed also that when I touched any of the faders on the 1884 it made a piano like sound, every fader had a different tone...very f-----g strange. Any button on the 1884 had a weird sound when I pressed on it.

If I stayed in Computer mode on the 1884, it showed a signal coming in to the SX3 on both channels 1 & 2, but when I tried to play it back, it was silent. When I switched to Monitor mode, the only way I could hear what I recorded was to press the F7 key on the 1884 at the expense of those weird beeping sounds. Even then, what I heard was not what I recorded, it didn't sound that good.

I checked all the connections and as far as I knew, they seemed OK. But then again, I'm pretty green with this setup. I noticed it all went downhill when I attempted the digital connection as I described above. Is there some kind of loop somewhere ?

Since you have this same setup, I would greatly appreciate your help. I hope I described the problem well enough. I hope you can figure it out because right now I feel like throwing it all out the window...

Thanks in advanced...

Peace

Re: your first problem: did you add two mono tracks or two stereo tracks in SX ? If it's the latter it's normal that you're hearing audio only on the left side. Check your mixer: is the input mono ? is the channel mono ? where is it panned ? what do you read on the output bus channel ? mono or left-only information ??

SX's mixing window and way of working can be a bit weird at first... the manual is a nice thing to read.

Re: the weird notes ... make sure your control surface isn't checked in the 'all midi inputs' box... controllers use midi to transmit data and if you (accidentally) connect the controller to a midi synth (hardware or soft) you are in fact making music ;-)

Read all manuals .. twice. If something isn't behaving the way it should be, check connections..

(ps: does this belong in the high-end forum ??? better move this to computers)

I dunno what to tell 'ya, we have some of the same stuff but the applications are totally different. I setup the studio connections panel once so it worked with the Motu panel and that was that. My Tascam FW-1082 is being used only as a controller...I don't even know if the audio section works! Never tried it!

That aside it sounds like maybe some kind of clocking issue. What's your master clock? It should probably be either Cubase or Tascam...check the control panel for each and make sure that you've selected one piece as the master and have everything else follow that. Beyond that maybe someone else can help or you should try Tascam support. I know they have updates & new drivers to make that stuff work "right" with SX3. I'm kinda useless with this stuff unless I have it directly in front of me...I'm far better at making records then doing tech support stuff.

Anywhoo...good luck with it!

My guess is that your input buss is set to stereo. Add an extra buss that is defined as mono, should clear it up
