A lot of trouble with RME Fireface 800 - 3rd post attempt

Hi all!

I just have to comment on how bad the RME Fireface 800 behaves for me when I'm recording. I have had a lot of trouble with it. Today I had all kinds of problems. Several times I didn't get any sound so I had to reboot Nuendo. And all of a sudden as I was mixing it jumped up to around 289 000 Hz when I was about to change some settings in one C1 compressor, I though I would lose my hearing, I had to fly to the monitoring desk to turn down the mix output volume before I would lose all my hearing! It was scary stuff! Sorry RME, but I start believing that RME is nothing for serious musicians... I've come to the point now when I've realised I either have to update my converter or my DAW software (Nuendo v2.2), because currently I'm losing more projects than I'm recording...!

Never had a problem like that. Why don't you email them and ask.

Did you test your setup with other applications? Those RME drivers are pretty rock solid, so my intuition would suggest there is something going on inside your sequencer. Activating a plugin and getting a negative result would point in that direction... RME made converterboxes for Steinberg, they were even rebranded. Did you try Nuendo forum?

I have had problems with these units ever since I got them. The reason I keep them is that there is nothing in the price bracket that comes close in terms of quality. Also, they usually post some kind of update that fixes the worst problems (only to break other things). In Tiger over the last few months I was having crazy bad firewire bus speed issues, causing dropouts and general sadness/anger. The new drivers fixed that.

BUT....I also have the loudest screaching noise ever that comes from my 2nd fireface unit when I first turn it on (that started happening after the newest drivers were installed). The first 2 times it happened I got fried. Now I just wait to turn my speakers on, so its ok.

Please write RME, I'll do the same. I was wondering today if anyone else has this problem.

I never had any problems with my Fireface. There might be something wrong with your unit.

Can you reproduce it's weird behaviour or is it random?

Contact RME or subscribe to their newsgroup. They usually react on that too.

the only problem I have is when the stupid lacie D2 firewire harddisk is doing something. (on seperate bus G4) man, I'm starting to hate the thing then there's that metallic crap coming out. But that is a firewire issue. Maybe your problem is also a firewire issue. might be poor firewire controller. those exist. also on apples (G5)

I have never experienced anything similar with the FF 800, however if you get loud bursts of white noise from using your Waves plugins, try upgrading your WaveShell. This will obviously not help if you have a faulty FF...

Best of luck!

Do you have the latest bios and system drivers for it? Mine is flawless on both my desktop and laptop running Nuendo 3 using all the inputs. I've personally never dealt with a poor running RME product unless it was a defect from the factory.
Also there are some good guys at www.synthax.com that can help you.
Good luck.

Hi,
Here goes some strange advice. I got my fireface about a year ago, and couldnt get it to work for abou 2 months. I tried everything. Diferent fierwire cards (Recomended Lacie included), diferente computers, diferent nuendos. Everything, even RME was confused at the problems i was having.
Guess what, the firewire cable that came with the unit was totally f*ked. I would get levels on the progams software inputs and everything. I just couldnt record.
Changed the cable and never had a problem again. Not 1. Touch wood.
Anyway, this probably isnt your prob, but check it out anyway.
Cheers
