help me steal some music

so im trying to download some cool NEW [as in i havent heard it before, or have heard it but down own it] music to listen to. but the problem is i cant think of a damn thing to search for. i have already gone through groups i like trying to find obscure shit...

so im looking for some new stuff, but i dont want filler... im looking for albums that rock. but just post the album name and that ONE song... or two. i dont want to DL the whole album, but i want to hear some stuff so i can hear it TO GO BUY THE ALBUM. i have been on an album buying binge lately and need some new bands to check out.

i like lots of styles, but dont even posting any pop albums... i like heavy stuff, stoner style... looking for new bands in that genre always. i like intellectual hip hop, no bitch bangin booty smackin cash flauntin cRap. i like electronic stuff although more of the triphop/ambient/breakbeat/dnb/jungle styles over the doggystyle house. any acid jazz... or freeform jazz stuff. indy rock is okay as long as the singer doesnt sound like a whiny bitch.

some bands that have stuck with me for many years in my players, just to get a feel for some albums that might be in my car if your rode in it:
13th floor elevators /roky erikson
aphex twin
allman bros
beastie boys
beck
birthday party
butthole surfers
clinton and pfunk
clutch
miles
eno
flaming lips
foo fighters
fugazi /mino9r threat
fu manchu
GAM
helios creed/chrome
jimi
jesus lizard /scratch acid
janes addiction
kyuss
laswell /material
marley
mc5
melvins
mercury rev
meters
bungle
nirvana
outkast
rev horton heat
roots
suplecs
sparklehorse
squishy
tribe called quest
violent femmes
ween
weezer

hwy, when you say "heavy stoner rock" I am a bit surprised to not see any Down on the list .. the "N.O.L.A." record was pretty cool iirc..

I'd say "Sleep : Dopesmoker", but the entire record is one big ass song.

hey a.j.

two weekends a buddy of mine from cleveland came to chitown to chill out and hang with nashville pussy (who rocked HARD)

here are some of the bands that he turned me onto.

nebula (my new favorite)
halfway to gone
dixie witch
hellacopters
alabama thunder pussy
sixty watt shaman
five horse johnson
red giant

most of these bands are just good ole boy, loud and fast beer drinking hell raising type of guys....but they all kicked my ass!

most of this stuff is hard to find so good luck!

peace

They probably haven't made it out to the East Coast yet, but there is a local LA band that you shouldn't miss-- DAKAH. (www.dakah.com but their website isn't great)

They are a 60 piece hip hop orchestra. Their CD is titled "Unfinished symphony" Unfortunately, the recording fidelity is pretty crappy, but the music is really kick-ass.

Just saw them perform last Saturday here in town. The group consists of full string section, big-band wind section, 2 turntables, drums, percussion, bass, guitars, a bunch of rappers and some great singers.... Music is influenced from all over the place from Ellington and Mingus to Parliment Funkadelic to the standard hip-hop stuff...

I know they also have some "authorized bootlegs" around as well... The latest concert was recorded by kufala records (www.kufala.com)

Tomahawk is definitely a sick, sick band. I prefer Mit Gas over the first disc though.

You might want to check out:

Barkmarket: Dave Sardy's old band
Skeleton Key: Their first disc is great. Engineered by Sardy.

You might like alot of stuff coming out on Ipecac (Patton's label). I heard a clip of Phantomsmasher and I'm intrigued. Electronica I might be able to stomach.

If you like Mr. Bungle, check out Secret Chiefs 3. It's essentially Bungle sans Patton.

beastie boys: Bufalo Daughter "Ivory" or "New Rock"
beck : (new beck) Sun Volt "Live Free" or "Blind Hope"
birthday party / fugazi /mino9r threat : Avskum "Bullshit Defenders" or "World-AIDS-Justice"
clutch : Sixty Watt Shamen "The evil behavior of ordinary people"
miles / Mr Bungle : X Legged Sally "Fewd" or "Moe"
marley : Cody Chestnut (horrible recordings) "Serve This Royalty" and "The Seed" (his version)
meters : Robert Walters 20th Congress "Bread and Water" or anything live from these cats.
outkast : Anticon "It's Them", Tortoise "DJed" or "Taunt and Tame"
rev horton heat: Southern Culture of the Skids "Viva De Santo!" or "Walleyed"
roots: Ozomatli "1,2,3,4 feat De La Soul", Burning Star "Warriors" or "Creation"
tribe called quest : J Live "Kick It to the Beat", BROSHIGEEZ "Achin"

Interpol - Obstacle 1 (might be Obstacle 2, the beat should be @116-120 bpm)

Not exactly stoner rock, but you mentioned looking for good indie stuff. I'd call them tough NY somewhat artsy rock. Obstacle is a good, jagged song that flows and the drumming is ****ing propulsive.

I don't dig the mix that much but it works for the music. I would have done it differently. The drums are meant to sound lo-fi crappy but they would be better if mixed cleaner and tighter.

The rest of the album is good but not great. It gets a little psychedelic in a good way. Still worth buying, methinks.

thats 2 mentions of 60 watt shamen now... i have seen those guys plenty of times to not like their music much. they are from my hometown. they usually played with Clutch or Bakerton. maybe they have gotten a lot better in the last 3 years. i was suprised anyone signed them... oh well, check out dog fashion disco, they are much better than 60watt but on the bungle tip more. KILLER singer in the band. from the same area.

SCOTS plays here a lot, i have seen them live a shitload of times.

anyone else here like drive by truckers? i have been told i will like them. im looking for the secret chiefs 3 after i was looking around on the net last night, nothing on kazaa from them but i love their guitarist and bassist... and drummer for that matter. sounds like a killer lineup.

i have all the moistboys stuff, its a little more psychotic than ween.

now i got a slew of shit to check out. good list E.

Oh yeah... and almost anything from Maktub or Reggie Watts (lead singer of Maktub)... On a modern Curtis Mayfield vibe... Great "party, but still wanna get some, music".

The Drive by Truckers are a great band but might be a bit twangy for ya'. A bud of mine used to play steel with 'em.

If you like the stuff like Aphex Twin may I be so bold to direct you to our own project? -> Visions Of Excess
But I would recommend after listening to our demo MP3s there and being interested to get the album instead of 'downloading' ... ;-) It's released at Tone Casualties in the US and on Minushabens in Europe. (I gave Jules a copy and he seemed to like it.)

artist: Amon Tobin
album: 'Supermodifer' and 'Out from Out Where'

I can't name "just that one song", get the albums, it's well worth it, imo. This guy blends old jazz samples with frantic yet intelligible beats that defy any categorization.
He's been a huge inspiration to me, taking sampling to the next level, it's genius.

artist: Goldfrapp
album: Felt Mountain

Again, a masterpiece in cinematic electronica (for lack of a better term), Portishead meets Ennio Morricone, insane Moog basses and leads. OK, if you must do the 'one song' before commiting, "Lovely Head" and "Utopia"

artist: UNKLE
album: Psyence Fiction

guest appearances by Thom Yorke, Richard Ashcroft, Beastie Boys. A great album.

Man, there's tons of that sort of stuff I can fill you in on, if you liked some of these, email me and I'll give you a more extensive list, this is just scratching the surface. Cheers....

I am surprised that people mentioning the allmighty Mike Patton and Tomahawk forget to mention Fantomas .

Okay it's not that new but anything from their "Director's Cut" album is so kickass... They got that drummer dude from Slayer as well (think his name is Dave Lombardo?). Awesome. Really. Awesome.

Did I mention its awesome?

i bought tomahawk [st] yesterday... still looking for 'mit gas'. SUCH a difference between the mp3's and the album. oddly, its LOUD and HUGE but the meters are bouncing a good bit and it doesnt clip. sounds REALLY good.

they didnt have fantomas, secret chiefs 3, mars volta, or sparta at the store. i might have to see if best buy has any of them, otherwise i have to order it at the store.

E-q, the discs are on their way. keep an eye out for them in a few days. i sent the squishy album fuzz sent me and this GAM CD... the guitarist is a total dick [lol] but the band is still cool. i woulda sent you some stuff i have done but it all sucks too much.... maybe next time.
