I haven't had any issues with Nero. Mind you I'm archiving hard drives as well as DVD's, just because I believe the shelf life of the DVD to be shorter. Not the cheapest way to do things but it's extra insurance to retain those files.

Any other software to check out? Anything cheaper than Nero? I really need to get started with the DVD backups....

you can try dvdfab decrypter. i haven't tried it yet but its supposed to be cool
