What hardware to you have to have for PT HD

Lets say you have a computer with HD3 installed on it.

What hardware would you need for it to run?

Could you get buy with just a controller? http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Command8/

I'm not intrested in tracking anything. Just mixing.

A friend of mine just bought a G5 with a pro tools HD system already loaded in it and I wanted to see what it would need to run. I'm not sure if it has any PT cards in it. Ill have to check it when I see him next time. Would a MBOX run the HD software?

an Mbox,001,002,00r all run PT's LE. HD is a whole new level.

You'll need one of their interfaces

either the 96 or 192 I/O

On the contrary, you can get an Apogee unit with the Xcard (I think that's what it's called), this will allow you to run the Apogee unit without a Digidesign interface. It makes Pro-Tools think the Apogee is a 192. I do believe you have to adjust the ADC for this though.

A control surface (command 8) is just a controller and won't work. The interface is for transfering audio in and out of the system, a controller just controls the software.

But he really dosent need any more a/d. He already has the files in wav that he imported from his hard disk recorder.

So I guess you still need all of the a/d d/a converters for it to work? I was thinking you could use a PT controller and it would run. I guess not....

By definition that means it has at least an HD Core card. You'd need at least one 96 or 192 I/O.

I find it hard to believe anyone would buy an HD system without knowing the details of what is needed to run the system... where did he buy it - off the back of a truck?

Guitar Center upgraged their pro tools system and sold off the G5 because they got a new one. I would think they took the cards out but it wouldnt suprise me if they just left them in it. He didnt buy it to use it with Pro Tools. He got it becuase it was a dirt cheap dual G5. He's using cubase now.

Then they should have removed all software installed on it.. which means he just bought a G5. If they left any software installed on the system, they could be in huge trouble.

OK, so you need 1 Digidesign HD card and 1 HD interface.

Have your friend check and see if there is a core card installed?

If Yes, you have two option:
1. Buy an interface for $2,000 to $3,000
2. Sell the card for about $5,000 and buy more gear.

If No, you also have two options
1. Buy a complete PT HD system for about $10,000
2. Delete PT HD because it is just wasting space and useless without the HD core card and HD interface.

Make sure to tell us how this story end.
