i prefer Sonalksis SV-315 for channel and drum bus duties.

I've been putting the UAD Fairchild in front of the PSP Vintage Warmer lately, and I like what I hear for some things.

I've also got the PSP Mixpressor, but I haven't had time to mess with it yet.

I like it so far, though.

I do use the McDsp MC2000 sometimes.

I think it can be a crutch to mix through a compressor.

Sometimes it makes sense to use a nice hardware comp with 1-2dB GR, such as the SSL (which I do sometimes) but no software comp will do the job IMO.

The worst results usually comes from people using a multiband compressor and/or too much limiting. You'll quite often get some really off-balance mixes and sometimes snares too high in volume.

I find the best results usually comes from getting the mix right without any additional compression on the output, and then maybe strapping on the 2bus comp, and making small changes. Then print a mix with and without the comp for the ME.

I just did a personal shootout (lots of mixing and try all the demos).

this one did it:
sonalksis SV-315

http://www.sonalksis.com/index.php?section_id=315

transparent till the end (RMS = 7dBm), make your stuff loud without distortion, much punch and clean

my PSP vintagewarmer is for sale now*joking*

second joice is elemental audio neodynium

enjoy your christmas food..

cheers George

My vote goes to the URS SSL style compressor. I think it sounds amazing. That, followed by the Sony Oxford Inflator is my favorite stereo buss combo these days.

Usually UAD Fairchild, light compression just about 1-3dB...

Can't wait for URS to release AU versions, I have the Everything EQ bundle and it definitely rocks.... I am sure I will enjoy their comps on the 2-buss as well...

I agree, it's great.
Their peak compressor is also very cool.
I also like the Samplitude comp, the waves C1 (believe it or not), or the Sonalksis.

It takes a lot of getting used to and ALOT of tweaking but the Wave Arts - Multi Band Compressor is very cool. Because it is multiband is can also have an EQ type effect as well.

http://www.wavearts.com/MultiDynamics5.html

Try it out!

P.S. - all their plugs are very CPU efficient as well

Yes, the Sonalksis is an excellent channel and bus compressor.

But I still wouldn't recommend it or any other piece of software on the mix :-)

Sony oxford EQ>Waves Renesance Comp or Focusrite D3>sometimes a mcdsp MC2000 or waves C4>Waves L1

I recently got URS 1970/1980 comps, and I think they are sounding cool, I mabye replace rencomp or D3 with one of them. I also use a hw comp in that posission a lot.

I think this will only mimic the sound of an 1176 driven hard, it doesn't do any compression. Still interesting option.

I wouldnt use a 1176 as a bus compressor.. way too much character. Plus.. if the unit is MONO how do you get a stereo impulse ?
