Thread Starter | Altiverb? Right now I'm primarily using Powercore's ClassicVerb for reverbs but looking to upgrade or at least add some options and it's probably between Altiverb and VSS3 for the Powercore. Couple of questions about Altiverb: 1) Is it good for rock production? (I've heard some nice classical demos made using its concert hall spaces but nothing rock...) 2) What sort of performance hit does a single instance of it cause on the CPU? (I'm using a Dual 2.0 G5 Powermac so in relation to that processor would be most helpful...) |

| I like Altiverb for any stuff! And if you know how a cool reverb is built... then add just the missing parts if ever: for example a little chorus (btw I'm a big fan of TCs chorus/flanger hoping the powercore stuff is the same like the hardware), modulation pitch...etc. The cpu power of your G5 is well enough. Said that I also wanna recomand you an alternative: an old PCM 70 or 60, it goes for around 500-800 on ebay, is easy to use and hard to get wrong... very cool for rockstuff and a nice complement to your TC stuff. I recently (as an experiment) set up a surround Altiverb and it did register on the Cubase SX 2 meter.... about 10% (give or take, I didn't take notes). Audioease has really fine tuned the plug to take advantage of the G5 processor! | |

Thread Starter | Well, that's good news about Altiverb's performance. I was afraid a stereo instance would use 20% CPU or something... |

Thread Starter | Well, I downloaded the demos for Altiverb, and TC's VSS3 and DVR2 and spent some time this weekend trying them out. It's actually a bit hard to get a feel for the demos with their awful disabling technologies built-in (Altiverb's submarine ping and TC's effects turn off and on at random intervals), but from what I experienced so far Altiverb came in 3rd place to the other 2 reverbs for my tastes. It didn't sound bad at all, I was just always able to come up with something a little better with each of the TC solutions. But the Altiverb demo has very few IRs included, so perhaps I'm simply not able to use the proper samples for the tunes I'm trying to mix. Being a true Gearslut I probably will end up with all three products before too long but right now I'm leaning towards the Powercore plugs first. Still if anyone wants to try to sway me from that decision I'm open to persuasion... |

| Well, you gotta trust your own ears, but I'd like to point out Altiverb has a no-latency option which does exactly what it says. A PCI card always has extra latency due to the additional round trip of data to the card and back. No so much a big deal if you're mixing and you have plug-in delay compensation, but is an issue if you'd like to track with a nice reverb. |
