can logic 9 sessions be opened in LP8?

You can't open LP9 in previous versions, but you can open previous versions in LP9. Sorry mate.

Yes. Logic 9 projects can be opened in Logic Pro 8; but obviously you would loose anything in the project that utilizes unique features new to Logic pro 9.

I found myself in a similar situation when I started doing projects in 9, while my collaborators were still working in 8. Everything went fine with going back and forth, as long as I didn't use anything unique to Logic Pro 9.

just gonna have flat audiofiles so it should be fine... gonna go record piano at a place with a steinway (weeeee!) but they only have LP8 on their machine. i'd much rather have logic's take/comp system than deal with PT playlists (i also use logic every day and haven't used PT in years, it'll be an easier day)
