synching DP/Motu 2408 with an analog tape machine

.....can someone tell me the simplest and cheapest way to synch my DP/Motu 2408 MK 3 setup to my Ampex 2" 16 track.....i tried burning SMPTE time code onto one track on my 16 track......i configured my DP/2408 setup to external synch and managed to achieve synch but when we tried to record into DP, it would only hold synch for a few seconds and then the playback buffer went into the red and DP stopped recording.....no amount of tweaking with buffers etc. could solve this.....i think i need an external synch box to achieve solid lockup via SMPTE with all of my machines.....can anyone tell me the simplest/cheapest way to achieve synch with my setup?.....

not for recording audio onto DP or playing back while synced to a 2".
The best way is get a machine syncroniser and a black burst box. Stripe your 2" while syncing to the black burst. The setup is the blackburst is the master, the syncroniser is referencing the burst and the DP is chasing the deck. OR Get something like an aardvark time sync II , it see the tc along with your midi syncroniser , it outputs wordclock to your audio interface which has to be set on wordclock in. No machine syncroniser needed. OR with a machine syncroniser print tc onto a track of DP and output it to the syncroniser and have the 2" chase it. OR [and this way sucks} if you have a MTP AV you can set it to LTC rather the LTC quicklok, the sync is unreliable and slower than syncing adats. My advice is either the first method or the second, either way you have to throw money at it.
