Apple & Intel - not sure about this...

Hey there.

Can someone explain the significance of the intel chip in a Mac?

I own both platforms - but probably use my Mac 85% of the time.

I need a new laptop - and if I wait for one of the Macs with an Intel chip in it - does this mean I can dual boot windows & mac on the same machine?

Just not certain what this all means...

Thanks,

SparkyCanada

The Most signifficant difference is than NONE of your existing software will work on it.
All your appliactions will need to be updated to work on it.
Althought Apple has not mentioned it I would be willing to place a bet you will be able to boot into Windows on it. But I would think Microsoft will want to disable that. PURE SPECULATION
The rumors are heavy that they be out in January, I would expect Laptops would follow smoe weeks later as Apple like to spead out the hype over a period of weeks.

ALL applications?
um, no.

Rosetta - Look it up.
In fact the last build of OSX on x86 utilized Altivec within Rosetta, making the translation even better/faster.

now,
audio apps and plug-ins? yea those will need updating, but developers have been anticipating this. Most major DAWs are cross-platform, so compiling x86 code for Mac won't be a huge undertaking for them. The ones you gotta watch out for are Logic, but that's an Apple product so expect it to come in with an Intel update early. The other is Digital Performer. Thats up in the air.
Also expect Digidesign to take at least 2-3 months for ProTools compatibility.

on a mobile computer, you'll get way more performance as the Powerbooks are expected to receive dual core Intel "Yonah" chips.

I thought this being an audio forum we would be talking about audio software. Still audio apps AFIK will not work without being updated how difficult or easy or how long it will take is varibale depending on what you own. I still have several thing that don't work in PT 7. I think it's a never ending chase as I just updated to a G5 last month and I will not be getting a new machine for at least 2 more years. I want the dust to settle. PCIe / Intel / etc it's going to be very messy for the next 12 months and I need everything to work.

why on earth would MS want to disable this, if they could? MS SELLS an OS. they want it to run on as many computers as possible.

Microsoft = a software company
Apple = a hardware company

Actually, the first word from Apple (during the week of the announcement) was that they would "do nothing to prevent" Windows running on the new Intel-based Macs. I haven't kept up, so I don't know if that's changed.

I, too, can not imagine why MS would not want legitimate copies of Windows to run on the new machines.

If anything thing Windows would eventually have a chance to run fairly stable on a set hardware config like Macs use.

hum.. i never hurd that one before, funny

Its like all the PC guys are just these big motorheads and that they feel need for more and more power to compensate for their small dicks. even if i does'nt work it still has alot of power.

just a joke, right?

gotta un-subscribe from this thread.

anyway...

here a good thread over at Os X audio about what you mentioned Dor
http://www.bigbluelounge.com/forums/...ic.php?t=26487

An illegal crack of OS X to run on generic PCs wont last to long. Its also not a good way to get stable/professional work done.

The fact is thaT If you want to use OS X you will need an Apple Computer

will you be able to run OS X on a PC?

By the way, my PC never crashes, but my friends MAC pro-tools studio is alway having problems with his G4.

Just an observation.
