UAD-1: 1176SE vs. 1176LN

Hi,

I am thinking about getting the new UAD-1 Flexi Pack where you can choose $500 worth of plug ins.

Since I mostly want UAD-1 for its compressors I was thinking about getting LA-2-A, Fairchild, Plate 140 (okay, not a compressor) and maybe Precision Limiter.

1176SE is included already, 1176LN would have to be purchased. So my question is: How do these two compare? Does 1176SE do what it´s supposed to or is it worth spending the extra €149?

Thanks!

well I can tell you that everytime that I tried to use the 1176SE, I immediately replaced it with the LN version. Trying to save cpu power with the SE doesn't work. It doesn't sound right to me. I don't like it.

On the other hand, the LN version is great.

I second that. UAD-1 1176LN all the way. The SE sounds terrible to me in comparison.

The LN is more 1176-like , but I like the option of a less cpu intensive version, and I think it still sounds good as plugs go.

I tried the demo of the Precision Limiter and I think I like the Vox Elephant more. They're close though.

The difference between the two is that the se does not have all the modeling blocks that the LN has. It has identical dynamic characteristics, but does not affect tone the same way.

FWIW, I actually use the SE a lot- probably just as much as the LN. It allows me to do heavy 1176 compression without the congestion/darkening of the tone that can often come with the 1176.

i agree - the ones you want are as follows:

1176LN
LA2A
Plate 140
Precision Limiter
Fairchild 670

The rest are OK but these are the best.

Sorry, the Voxengo Elephant, do some searches, that's the fun part. And Soniformer is way bad too. You can get both for $99.

I don't know all optons for purchasing the UAD-! these days, I bought mine a long while back. I mainly use the 1176LN, the La2a, the 1176SE, and the channel strip, Ex1,or something. Pultec is okay on kick. The real verb doesn't sound natural to me, and I don't have any other UAD reverbs. Hell, I really don't know whiich ones you should buy, come to think of it.

Can't be more accurate than that
I hope more people could post good -no BS- answer like that.

I find the LN sounds better and has more character but you just can use them on every track you have.

It use tons of CPU!

IMO they're worth the purchase if you don't own any real compressors.

Along with the LA2A, you'll be mixing with flavour.

I would still get the LE for taming tracks but the LN will bite in a pleasing way.

Good Luck!

Jason
