Measuring Roland S-760’s attack, release, and cutoff frequency?

Is there a way to measure the attack, release, and cutoff frequency of a device?

I am attempting to convert a customized Roland S-760 sample CD to a software sampler format such as MachFive, GigaStudio, or Kontakt. I’ve tried both Translator and CDXTRACT/UVI-Xtract with mixed results. While the sustained sound is close, the attacks are too slow, the releases are too fast, and the cutoff frequencies are wrong. I called Roland to ask them how the TVF cutoff frequency and TVA attack & release parameters (values 0-127) relate to actual frequencies in Hz and time in seconds. They told me they have been trying to get this same information from their engineers in Japan for over 10 years!

So, I’m wondering if there is a way to measure these characteristics for each patch. Maybe by replacing the sample with some kind of test tone on the S-760 and analyzing the playback of it?

Thank you,
Mark

I cant answer your tech question. However, if your looking to convert your library it would be a good idea to check out the newer Roland stuff like the MV sample workstation which is fully compatible with the S range of samplers. If you can get a hold of one of them just to do the transfer it shouldnt take to long. From there your options might be better for transfering your library to another format. A lot of the new roland stuff has USB ports so if you have Iomega zip disks you can get hold of a USB zip drive to transfer easily. CD rom stuff is no problem.

I have had less than stellar results using CD xtract......all the filtering stuff is lost. Shame really as the S series still has the best filters and sound of any hardware sampler.

Check out this mailing list:

THE S760 list...

There's definitely people gone the same conversion-route over at that place.
