are 2005/2006 the 'wait and see' years?

with so much in transition -- 32-64 bit, dual core, quad processing, pci out, pci-x "in" sooner or later, firewire, etc....with the lag in hardware designs and software compat. does anyone else just waiting on the fence for a while before making any big purchases?

You can get a lot of work done in the calm at the eye of the hurricane.

I like times like this for their relative stability... more or less mature platforms with major issues all ironed out. With a relatively modern machine, you can more or less be assured your softwear won't outmatch your computer...

Once new hardware and software platforms start coming out and various hardware and software vendors start chasing new grails... it's turmoil time.

I have to do large chunk purchasing in a very pragmatic fashion because I'm poor and I actually do audio for a living without a "day gig" to feed the monkey.

This is a good time to watch all of the mooks at Banjo Depot and the other prosumer stores flog shit like "holiday specials!". Hobbyist sellers don't like any hitches in their sales.

This is a good time to roll your own DAW.

This is a good time to make sure that you DO get your large money buys from cats like Fletcher and other pro audio people who make sure that your ass is covered with the kind of support and warranty offers that such vendors give you for your money.

This is a very good time to figure out what your market will support and if anybody who uses your services gives a good Goddamn about the difference between a Brauner Valvet and a AT 40 series.

YMMV

I guess dual core with X64 support is the way to go.
Just make shure your motherboard supports Firewire400/800, S-ATA2 and has two PCIe slots + the usual PCI slots.

I don't think you have to "wait", just upgrade your software when it's released as 64-bit.
