manning1: You knew some designers 'in your time (at univ)'. I dunno how old you are, but that might be rather a while ago. I got connections there today, and i don't hear panic from there. They got interesting stuff coming up. One of those companies doing R&D is the Belgian (university connected) Imec: www.imec.be Sure we'll hit a wall at silicon based stuff, but again, the world doesn't end with silicone.

i'm well aware delta of research. the holy grail of computing if you want to get technical has always been in the realm of trying to control the stasus of sub atomic or fundamental particles to produce the perfect fast digital switch. within the atomic structure. yes - theres lots of on going research being conducted in labs all over the place. has been for years and years. and if the belgians can do it. i'll be one of the happiest daw users alive. but i maintain my position. theres a wide chasm between what can be done in a lab setting using millions of dollars worth of science gear and **manufacturing** and selling a processor for a daw for 80 bucks like amd does. as i say the holy grail is some sort of powerfull quantum physics based computer. but i dont think we'll be seeing it anytime soon for 500 bucks at your local computer store. the next phase of the "game" as i call it is that intel and amd will try and milk the technology curve based on silicone up thru the 8ghz level with small increments in speed at a time. as your seeing currently. its nothing more than HEAT which will break moores law. i'm sorry we disagree on these matters. |

Hench ... I never said the event I mentioned was the first one ... I merely wanted to give an example of something I knew to be recorded DTD earlier then the event Gil mentioned. I'm sure the one you mention isn't the first one either. Hard diskrecorders have been round for ages now ... I'm sure someone somewhere somehow has recorded something live wherever to whatever disk prior to 2000 too. Chances are it was even on Sounddesigner II.

roger starr. re: what will happen to logic pro ? frankly i dont really know whats in the minds of the product strategists regarding this product. anyway, these days i dont think it matters. there are so many good alternatives. another poster commented, all i want to do is record. i do this all the time with software that cost me under 100 bucks. and is legitimate legal software. i dont load up 8 plug ins per track. this is for the newbies who seem to think plug ins are a panacea for every poor recording practice imho. the fact is - like it or not its a pc world. i'm no big fan of the windows OS being a tekkie, but the fact is windows XP (as someone else commented on sluts) on an amd 64 ROCKS !! where daw users get into trouble running windows - particularly - young newbies is they throw all sorts of junk on their systems, allow tmp files to build up and spyware etc which degrades performance. a pc is just like a 2 inch studer. if you dont look after it , performance is affected. also a lot of youngsters often get mum or dads old p3 pc (which is probably performance degraded) then blame the pc when it wont run 80 tracks. ive seen this many many times. overall i still maintain the PC will win, and always continue winning because of the large installed base of revenue opportunities to be had by add on vendors of sound recording software and hardware. |

| I'm reminded of another thread on another forum in another galaxy in another time, when in either a. an inspired b. lunatic (choose which one you think is appropriate) rave I mentioned the weird syncronistic parrallels between Apple and Digi at the time and Kubricks 2001 Space Odyssey. This was after reading an article on MacCentral Online - "Apple betting audio pros will like MacOSX 10.1" (Oct 5 2001 - please note the year of the article!) At the time there was a lot of controversy over Digi's mixer and summing (hmmm......) One of Digi's CEO's weighed in - his name was DAVE Lebolt. Apple's (new) operating system OS X 10.1 was flagged/tagged as being based on it's Hardware Abstraction Layer - that is "HAL". So putting it all together I got: "2001" "HAL" "Dave". Spooky huh? Since then, as we all know Apple bought Emagic, and has it's fledgling Garage Band thing happening, which is basically a very annoying Icon on my desktop. As far as I know, Dave is still around. But HAL appears to be getting stronger. Still seems to be only a matter of time before the space lock door is engaged. The only thing stopping HAL is the same sort of arrogance that seems to affect most major computer developers - a disregard for our actual needs and throwing us a slice of bread which we think is cake occasionally. And on a final note - do not forget oh friends, that as Kubrick knew, computers are evil fiends masquerading as indispensible friends. Proof of this is that my own G4 Laptop froze half way through my first attempt to post this reply. I then had to go through a quit process via Control/option/esc that I had never had to use before. (IT knew )I have an HD/Accel system myself....but I still have this nagging feeling that, like George Orwell, Kubrick was right - they both got the date's wrong, that's all. Remember: 2001, HAL, Dave(or maybe D for Digi). Apple buys logic etc. This is Nostradamus - Stedel signing out - the Truth Is Out There - REALLY "Out There" Kind regards in spooky syncronistic semiotics |
