PCI Express

has anyone heard any updates on companies getting some cards out for the new mac?
i was looking at getting a lynx aurora but it seam's now it will be some time for cards.
this is a issue as i plan for a new G-5 after the first of the year and my rep says their will be no more PCI slots.
i guess it's a waiting game for now.

There's a company called SBS that already makes an expansion chassis product that will fit your needs - http://www.sbs.com/products/774

Lightbulb Digi Chassis

Digidesign is going to be releasing their own expansion chassis that will work with PCIe and PCI-X/PCI systems. I know you are not using Digidesign hardware, but if their chassis works with other PCI cards (why would it not?), then it should at least be considered.

Texas Instruments is making a chip, not an expansion case.

Magma has announced a PCI to PCI-e expansion case aswell as the mentioned above SBS

I don't see how that Texas instruments thing would work. I sure wish it would, but there's so little info. on it that it's hard to even really know what it is.

I think a chassis might be our only solution.

Which is cool if you have a bunch of Pro Tools cards you need to use, but $2,000.00 just to use one PCI card is insane....

i am very surprised companies such lynx, motu, or rme have not already announced a pci-e card to be in the work's.
i get the impression some companies are expecting apple to go back to the pci cards.

It's true, it's true!

Did you know that the cost of a MIXPlus-->HD|2 Accel upgrade is the same price as cross-grading (Digidesign marketing speak) a HD|2 Accel PCI-->HD|2 Accel PCIe?

The Digidesign expansion chassis costs less than a crossgrade! Digidesign is, effectively, forcing users to buy their chassis. I smell a hidden agenda, and I don't like it!

They are certainly acting like it, but it would never happen. Apple is usually a first adopter of new technology and they never look back.
I get the impression that some companies are expecting technology to stand still around them. Within a year or two everything will be pci express, so why not adopt it now and be ready and done down the road????

I'm sure they're working on PCI-e, but don't want to announce it lest they cannabalize sales of current stock.

I wish someone could get to the bottom of the Texas instruments adapter thingee. Someone in another forum said it would work for our needs, but I can't seem to find out what it is, and if it would truly function as a PCI-express to PCI adapter. It would solve everything for a lot of us wanting to get a quad G5 if it really did what it appears to do.

HELP ME

heyo, Dont these things introduce latency when you are using them for vst power? I was under the impression that the PCI expansion chasis' (non PT) would introduce latency.

There's a very interesting article about this in the Sound on Sound magazine from this month. Representatives of some well known companies are interviewed and this exact question is asked.

Interesting also to see how reserved some companies are with giving any info regarding future development while the other talks very openly about it. You can see this exact behaviour in the way these companies do business.

thanks, i will see if can find a copy.
it's is amazing that companies are so reserved about this.
i can see keeping future developments of a product secret for many reason, one being, as mentioned earlier, not to cannibalize a current product line.
it do in this case seem as if they are going to have to come up with something or be left behind, or at least that what i am getting.
i do not believe it would hurt their sales to announce that they are working on a card at this time.
i had planned on a new G-5 but for now it seems that will have to be put on hold.
