UAD-2 solo x 2 vs. duo

If I understand the UAD-2 setup, buying 2 UAD-2 solo cards or one UAD-2 duo is exactly the same, except the solo is on 2 cards vs the Duo being on 1 card. Is that correct?

The reason that I am asking, is that you get more vouchers and 2 free plugs with the solo cards. With the UAD duo, you get a $50 voucher only. Seems like buying 2 solos is a better deal. I still have a PCI slot in case I want to buy another one later.

Having 2 cards vs. 1 shouldn't add more buffer under runs or latency, right?

Wow now that you mention it and I looked it up...I believe you are right. I suppose the only reason you would want the duo is in case you only have one slot open, or in the future if you want to add more...

And no it will definitely not add more latency or anything. This sounds like a good deal to me especially with the limited offer for 2 plugins!

If I read the promo correctly, the Neve Solo is a pretty good deal right now.
For $700 you get the uad-2 solo along with the
33609
88RS
Helios
Fairchild

and another $200 voucher

JRRshop.com : Universal Audio UAD-2 Solo Neve - Double Voucher! [uad2nevana32] - $699.00USD

Or if you're not interested in the Neve plugs, the Solo flexi is the same price and you get a $500 voucher in addition to the Helios & Fairchild

JRRshop.com : Universal Audio UAD-2 Solo Flexi [uad2soloflexi] - $699.00USD

Oh cool! Thanks for the reply, guys. I'll give UAD a call. It's weird that they have such varied rebates on their cards.

UA is coming out with some killa UAD-2 sales promos. I just saw this new UAD-2 Power User upgrade special @ JRRshop.com :
Free FATSO and/or Manley Massive Passive with purchase of a DUO or QUAD. So if you got the DUO Neve Pak you would get:

33609
88RS
1073
1081
FATSO or Massive Passive
$200 plugin voucher

That is $1545 worth of plugins + UAD-2 DUO for $1274 (with 15% group buy discount). Like getting a 17% discount on UAD plugins and getting a FREE DUO card! There seems to be lot's of good UAD-2 deals right now if you play your cards right (pun intended)!

Cheers,

Billy Buck

Ah yes I forgot the 'group' discount at JRR. (The keyword is either 'group' or 'forum'). That brings the price under $600

not sure how much of a difference it makes in
- power consumption
- heat production
- air flow

My preference would be to have less pieces to screw in an out (as long as the difference is as little as $50).

The UAD-2 cards are much more energy efficient (greener) than
the old UAD-1 cards. Even running (4) UAD-2 SOLO cards would still be more efficient than a single UAD-1 PCI card. Cripes, even (2) UAD-2 QUADS (24 x the DSP of a single UAD-1) use less power than a single UAD-1 PCI card. Actual power draw when running at full DSP load are listed for each card model below:

UAD-1: 15 Watts
UAD-1e: 9 watts
UAD-2 Solo: 3.5 Watts
UAD-2 Duo: 5 Watts
UAD-2 Quad: 7 Watts

A common mix for me includes:
(24) 88rs
(3) 1176ln
(2) La2a
(1) Neve 33609
(4) Neve 1081
(2) Plate 140
(1) Precision Maximizer
(1) Precision Limiter

I keep DSP load lock off, and these plugins use about 90% of my UAD-2 duo. I think the duo is minimum if you want to attempt to use exclusively UAD plugins. A solo is fine if you are only wanting to augment your native plugins.

FYI -

With the UAD-1 upgrade special through the end of June (if you are not currently a UAD-2 owner), you get the Fatso AND the Manley for free with the purchase of a Quad card.

With the Duo, you get one or the other.

That means that the Quad Flexi, with a JRR discount, you can get $1100 in plugs with a $1500 card.

Ay Carumba!

I accidently fall in love with the softube plugins and havent touched my uad plugins since.

If you really want to use them buy a quad..

Until you hear the Massive Passive and need more DSP for a big involved mix.
