Nuendo outboard gear auto latency comp? does it really work ?

Example = I got some drum tracks recorded to disk.

I want to send them out my daw via lynx aes 16 into the crane song spider (for a little tape emulation)
then back to the computer.

There will be a certain amount of latency it took to do the round trip.

This were using Nuendo's outboard gear auto latency compensation should automatically fix the delay quick and easy.

I have read the manuel and searched the forum but I can't get it to work, anyone successfully using this feature in Nuendo?

Yeah, it works. You gotta "PING" the outboard gear to calculate the delay, then it compensates for it. Woohoo!

don't have a crane, but use nuendo with other external devices and once you set up the latency properly when you first add the hardware (using a ping test), works like a charm.

I use this feature every day. The only thing I've found (and although the people on the Nuendo forum will say differently) is that each time you change your buffer setting it is a good idea to re-ping the outboard gear. For some reason it tightens everything up for me. Just remember that if you are going to be using outboard effects like verbs and delays to always set them to dry before pinging. Otherwise it can't calculate the delay time accurately.

Works like a charm and actually allows you to be a console-less studio with great analog outboard gear. I love it!

use it every day works like a charm.

Once you "ping" the device, can store its routing and latency as a preset, and just bring it into your connections setup from a menu with one step.

Does the new Sonar 5 have this feature? Anyone have any luck using outboard gear with any version of Sonar in this manner?

is this at all possible with Logic? cuz right now i have to nudge the delay forward by ear for tightness... and it's a real pain!

As far as I know... only Cubase SX 3.x and Nuendo 3.x have this. And yes.. it works REALLY well. I use it all the time. :D

Sucks not to be a Cubase/Nuendo user.

I too am using this feature every session. Why would anyone desiring to use outboard in their mix screw with a DAW that can't do this?

Cubase makes PTLE look like a sad joke.

Well if Sonar can't do this or won't be able to in the near future, I'll have to jump ship to a new program. . . does Samplitude do it?

This is the only feature that I use in Nuendo 3 over 2. I have 2 LA4A's and a distressor that I run as effects. Amazing.....

PT people have to re-record the track with the effect, which is time consuming and you can't undo.

How about when you add two plugs on top of each other...

lets say a Pultec and then a Distressor...

??

can it be done in 1 trip or does it has to go out (pultec) and then back in and back out again for the distressor? Or, can it only be done via patchbay???

thanks

I'm not sure how you "ping" your outboard gear in Cubase SX3.
Can anyone shed some light on this?
Thanks a bunch

When you set up your external effects you set the inputs and outputs and give them names.

After that you insert them in tracks just the same as any other plug.

So yes, you can have multiple effects in the one track.

Ok... but what I am asking is,,, doesn't this process work on two round trips for conversion?

If you run your first effect as a reverb, than it has to come back in right?

then your second effect is a compressor... it has to recieve the signal that has effect #1 on it in order to be part of the chain... so... therefore

Effect # 1 goes out and then back in so that it can pass on to effect #2... and so on.

If I had an EQ, Comp, EQ, Limiter on a track.... the first EQ will be in it's fourth stage of conversion when it reaches the limiter?

does it work this way?

I use a patchbay for this and only send it out once but... I was just wondering this possibility.

Thanks

Once you setup the external FX and have the plugin window open for this effect, you simply hit the ping button. I forgot what it looks like, but it's next to the bypass button I think and is orange if I recall. It will then automatically set a latency that it needs to compensate for...look for something around 2ms.

Yes it would be two round trips through conversion unless you make a connection via your patchbay. I personally would just patch it if you know ahead of time you are going to have a specific analog chain.

Thanks Brad,

I thought it might be like that...

Still cool though with the proper use of a patchbay. 2 trips of conversion is not bad but more than that is just too much for my likings.
