Thread Starter | which external hard drive
i've been looking for an external hard drive (firewire) for my laptop and i wanted to see if i could get an opinion on which manufacturer to go with. i see the lacie drives everywhere and i've heard that they are pretty good. but i also see the glyph drives in most pro studios. is one better than the other or am i just paying for a name with the glyph. i'd like to get as much space as i can for under $300, any suggestions, AudioAlchemy |

I can't speak for Glyph, but an engineer I work with just picked up a LaCie (F.A. Porsche design) 250GB FW disk for $160! thumbsup

My Lacie died on me! So I bought a FireWire800 enclosure with a 300GB 7200RPM SATA hard drive from macgurus.com (wiebetech.com is another good source for this) cost $340 and is fast as hell! No comments on longevitiy yet (obviously) but so far I am happy! |

the neat thing about glyph drives is that they guarantee them to not crap out on you, and if they do, you can send it in and they will recover the data for you, free o charge. They are rock solid too. I had a Lacie, but the enclosure broke (about 2 years after I got it)-- My recommendation is that you buy JUST the enclosure and make sure it has an Oxford 911 Bridge (for Pro tools compatability)---then just buy a regurlar old harddrive (Seagates are good!)--that will save you $$$ |

I have a Maxxtor 300gb, a 250gb drive on a enclosure, and a tiny 80gb laptop drive on a enclosure. The maxtor is the noisiest of the bunch, the one i like more is the 2.5" HD, is silent self powered trhu the USB hub. i´d perhaps now would buy one the LaCie FW drives, the ones that are self powered by the FW port, but now that i know about the Glyph warranty scheme i don´t know anymore. Be carefull with the hot plugin feature, acordint to October SoS mag this is badly implemented on FW, there are reporets about FW ports , along with drives, audio interfaces and boards being damaged beyond repair. Bye. |
