SSL freeware "listen mic compressor"

Hi there!

I'd like to hear some opinions on the SSL LMC-1.
I tried it across a 32bit/48kHz stereo drum mix in cubase SX3 and was really disappointed. Yes, i't fast and yes, it does bring up room ambience. But where did the low end go?! This thing definitely didn't fatten up my track. On the contrary, the sound got thin and boxy!
Maybe I'm expecting too much of this thing, after all it was just intended for a "utility" mic?
Let's hear other user's experiences and suggestions.

What if you parallel it with the rest of the drummix? Get your low end from another chain.

But to be honest the pluging didn't do much for me either, but who knows maybe sometime it will be just what a track needs.

You have to remember what this plugin is 'modelled' on.

Its not the channel comp or the bus comp or the quad comp.

Its from the talkback circuit and as such it delivers a pretty lofi sound.

An example to use it.

Im assuming your using real recorded drum with some real room ambience,

Take a mono feed either from a mono mic in the room or sum a stereo feed to mono.

Send this to the LMC1 via a aux or a bus,

Mix it back in with your original drums.

Tweak compressor for desired effect.

great for adding some colour and life and dirt.

Not everything has to sound big solo'd to sound HUGE in the mix.

Its all a case of context......

All imo of course
