Thread Starter | help!...nasty clicking-g5/poco/uad1
hi, i've got a g5 dual 2gig with a poco mk2 element and a uad1 card (also using motu 2408 pci) i'm getting a nasty clicking thats very audible on strings and reverbs when i have a lot of plugins switched on (pci related plugins that is...) it sounds like there is too much info getting bottlenecked somewhere, but i'm not sure how to fix it, if its fixable, i've tried shuffling round the cards in the various pci slots with no difference. i've got the 2408 with large disc buffer, process buffer range large and io buffer 1024, although i've changed these settings, sometimes with no obvious difference, sometimes it makes it worse... does anyone have any advice pls? (or the link to the thread where i should be looking )thanks! |

I don't have an UAD card myself, but are you aware that there are some problems with using an UAD and the AMD8131 PCI controller chipset? (the latest dual 2Ghz, doesn't have this chipset, I don't know which version you have). There's a lot of info to be found about this card and the problems/solutions on the UAD forums, these are not officially run by UAD but the product specialists of UAD chime in from time to time. http://www.chrismilne.com/uadforums/ And the info about the AMD chipset right from the source: http://www.uaudio.com/webzine/2005/March/index5.html http://www.uaudio.com/webzine/2005/may/index3.html http://uaudio.com/webzine/2005/august/index7.html |

Hey, if you call 866 UAD 1176 and ask for mac uad support, you'll be glad! They have great support!

I am aware of lots of poco/uad owners having similiar issues to these. There is a bit of a bottle neck on the G5. The TOP PCI slot on G5's runs on its own bus stick your UAD in there. Firewire on the g5 is less than perfect. If your using a poco avoid using a firewire HD. Bear in mind that the poco/uad combination works like this. If you insert a poco plug into your DAW then assuming stereo that audio has to go from the DAW to the poco get processed then return, if you insert 2 poco plugins in series then that doubles repeat for all plugins inserted on your system If you now add in a UAD which has to do exactly the same thing you can quickly see how it can start to get a bit busy on the PCI/Firewire busses. Choose higher latencies , keep all audio on internal disks and keep the UAD in the PCI slot closest to the PSU and you *should* be ok. Just be glad your not using a firewire audio card as well..........002 is a nitemare.... for this kind of thing... The busses on the G5 have a lot of shared bandwidth its not quite as glorious bandwidth wise as people like to make out. I am a happy G5 owner but I run PCI sound cards and SATA disks for samples I avoid firewire at all costs. GFX FXpansion Audio UK Ltd. |
