Sluggish WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER

Friends ...

MP3s take forever to play on my DAW using Windows Media Player. I remember reading of a tweak that'll improve performance. Can anyone tell me what it was???

Thanks!!

If you are having trouble with locally stored media then you might try to disable CPU throttling. http://www.diefer.de/speedswitchxp/index.html for a free utility that is nice.

If you remember setting a performance switch to 'quiet' instead of 'max performance' then this is likely your problem.

Good luck!

I'm running WinXP on an IWill mobo with a pre-SSE AMD Athlon processor (1.4 Ghz) coupled with an Aardvark Q10 soundcard / breakout box. Hmm, what else to add? I noticed this same sluggish performance when running Win2000 on the same system last week. I'd since upgraded to XP.

Thanks for your help, guys!

what sound system are you using to play back in media player ??
if the ardvark......try on board sound chip....and tell me if that works better.
also...could you list what devices are in your pci slots in the athlon.

I think everything goes through the Aardvark? How do I route to a different sound card?

To further prove my ignorance on this matter ... What's the most efficient way to determine PCI devices?

my goodness gradation....
no disrespect but get yourself a windows book and start reading it...
or your local library might have a win book.
its very important you gain working knowledge of your system at the earliest.

re.......pci....i dont want you mucking around with the internals of your pc.....
so.....on your invoice when you bought the athlon it should list the devices that you bought.....for example......your ardvark will occupy a pci slot.....
who installed the aardvark ??...yourself ??
if you could list your invoice components ....this might help.
also...are you using this pc for other applications like video recording ??
the net ??......OR is it strictly audio ??
please tell us what your using this pc for....this will help figure out whats possibly in your slots.
my suspicion at this point is poissibly there is an incompatibility tween the ardvark drivers and media player.....you might talk to other ardvark users and see if they have this problem....your memory level is good....so i suspect driver issues.
is this a brand name/store bought amd athlon OR a diy duct tape type machine ??

with your iwill motherboard you will have received a USER MANUAL i hope.
in there it will tell you if your iwill has on board sound chip.
you can also go into windows control panel.....and select on board sound
rather than the ardvark.
frankly from what youve said so far.....allow me to comment....i would get a pc tech to give your system a once over....including checking dma is enabled on your hard drives. even though its slightly older now...theres no reason you wont get many years of service STILL if this pc is set up right.
ALSO..if your drives are old and clunky you might look at putting in a new drive...i just did this on an old amd 800 mhz jobbie....and it was like a crazy new fire breather....decent drives are very important.....peace.
