Duende FAIL

Hey there everybody.

I am starting to really detest my SSL Duende "Classic." Upon migrating to Logic 9 and Snow Leopard, the Duende is a crash machine. I'm regularly getting the Black Screen Of Death. I have the latest firmware and drivers. I have 2.60 software installed. If I boot from scratch I can maybe get a half hour of mixing done before it crashes. Sometimes I reboot and it just immediately crashes again. If I leave it plugged in overnight I will certainly wake up to the Black Screen Of Death, even if Logic isn't open.

Any advice from anybody, other than "smash the thing into bits with a ball peen hammer?" It would be nice to use this expensive thing as something other than a paperweight/blood pressure elevator.

are you against upgrading to the latest v3 drivers for some reason?

I've read tons of horror stories here about v3 being even buggier than v2, with lots of people installing v3 then "downgrading" back to v2. Oddly enough, since I posted this earlier, the computer has only crashed once, when I disconnected my Duet to use it with my laptop. Still annoying.

V3 works great for me. I honestly did not have too many issues with V2. I don't ask a lot out of it, only use a few plugs here or there or maybe spray a bunch of channel strips across all channels.

Maybe it's some sort of problem with my firewire buss? The computer tends to crash when it wakes up from a long sleep, as in first thing in the morning, but only when the Duende is plugged in. Again, this is when no music software is even running, so it can't be a software problem. Either something is janky with my unit or there's something weird with my firewire buss. It never did this when I was running Leopard, but it does it very consistently now that I'm on SL. I will just have to get into the habit of disconnecting it when I'm done with a session I suppose, but sometimes disconnecting and reconnecting causes the crash too. It can't be good for one's computer to have it crash several times a day.

It could be something flakey with your firewire but from your description I think you have corrupted hard disk data.

Sorry to say, a wipe and fresh install of OS and software looms large in your future. I would begin formulating your backup plan and prepare to allocate the time.

Best of luck to you.

could be bad power...
Computer slower on location! Please help!

could be a not good enough firewire cable. = not OFC. not enough shielded, etc...

why let the computer sleep?
just let him only turn off the monitor after 3 minutes.
no screen saver...
basic power savings.

The Duende seems to get "tired." It will run okay for a few hours, then eventually I'll load up a session and it'll say "Unable to load plugin." If I try to reboot it won't load the plugin no matter what I do, but if I come back the next day after the Duende has "rested" for a while, I can get a few hours of use out of it.

I should also mention that my system is 100% rock solid and never has any sort of hiccups or crashing problems unless there is an SSL Duende plugged into it.
