Inserting hardware while mixing ITB?

Hi All,

What's the best method for inserting hardware (comps, EQ, etc) during mixing? Is it best to send the track out via an output or can you effectively INSERT the hardware in some way?

I'd appreciate any tips for specific tips in doing this.

BTW, I'm using Digital Performer 7, but non-DP users might be able to help too

Thanks!!!

Tom

Logic has an "I/O" plug-in that can be inserted anywhere in the insert chain. The plug has "Output" and "Input" drop downs that correspond to hardware patchpoints on your interfaces. Those get routed to your compressor/EQ/FX/etc and back into Logic. Then you hit the "ping" button at the bottom of the plug and the roundtrip latency is measure and compensated for.

I have no idea if DP has this capability these days as I gave up on it back in the v4 days.

Cubase you set it up as an external effect...name it...define the IO it's plugged into...and then it shows as an insert along side the plug ins.

I use Sonar and it allows hardware inserts to be poatched in but that was frustrating to work out.

What I do now is send my hardware outputs from my soundcard out to the outboard and then into my mixing desk and mix that way.You would need to have a console or cheap desk to do it this way but the results are better than going out/in and out again by mixing ITB through the master bus.Hope that statement makes sense..

I found it annoying to deal with latency going out and then in again. It is technically purer as well I guess becasue there is only one conversion from Digital to analog on the way out.

just my 2 cents

I find recall (and latency) a complete pain in the butt, so do anything to avoid it.

In practise this means getting a sound I like from the hardware ASAP, then print it back to new audio track, and continue. Both Logic and ProTools have I/O insert plugins, and while useful, I find getting the sound back ITB quickly as poss is the best method.

Thanks. Does this mean you just send your track straight out to a channel on your interface (not using an insert function), into your hardware, back into DAW, and printing it on the way in? I'm after the specifics here.

I'm new at this, so forgive me:
Wouldn't this method produce the same latency as using an insert?

You lost me, Henry. Could you break it down a bit further?

Do you send all your tracks to a desk, insert your hardware and mix down to another source?

Thanks,
Tom
