Drum sequencing / notebook software question

Anybody with thoughts, preferences, stories or guidance for buying a sequencing / synth percussion software?

Dont need all the other music instruments or sampling. Really just want drums / percussion only for writing / augmenting / backing tracks.
Im pretty computer illiterate, everything I run now is outboard. Record to Mackie HDR24/96. I have a pretty standard PC, pentium 4 ; 2.8GHz...sound blaster card I think. Would be sequencing to WAV files and trasfering to HDR.

Also, would anyone share thoughts, preferences, stories or guidance for buying a notebook for above said purpose that would be dedicated to just music software, to use that instead of above mentioned family PC?

peace and ppffthanks.

You have a few options when it comes to software drum computers--here are some that I've heard good things about, I wont go into a bunch of detail, as I dont have much experience with them, but I'll put the names out there so you can read up on them:

Spectrasonics Stylus RMX ($279, not a traditional drum machine, persay, more of a loop/groove agent), MOTU MachFive ($369, more of a full on sampler), Native Instruments Battery($199, straight up drum sampler), or Reason($450, gives you Drum Machine and LOTS more)
There are tons more out there, these are the ones right off the top of my head though.

As for a notebook, I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest an Apple iBook (or powerbook if you've got the $$$). But they've got a good Power/Money ratio now--you can pick one up for sub-$1000 now that could easilly handled a couple instances of a drum computer--plus you'll be able to say you have an Apple, which is industry standard.

Best of luck to you!
