Upgrading my computer to AMD64 dualcore... any thoughts?

I'm upgrading in the next couple month to a more powerful machine... Here is what I have now:

ASUS P4G8X Deluxe
Intel P4 3,06gHz with 533 FSB and 2Gb DDR 400
Adaptec 29160 SCSI card
1x 36Gb & 1x 18Gb SCSI Drives for Audio
2x 80 Gb IDE, one for OS, one for Audio in removable bays
2x 160GB IDE for backup of current projects in removable bays

I was thinking about buying an AMD 64 dual core... The computer shall have a MOTU PCI 424 + 3x HD192, as well as a Powercore mkII and a UAD-1. I will use SATA drives in Raid 1 (dropping the SCSI). I would also like it in a 19'' Rack...

Any thoughts/recommendations on a configuration for all that?

Greets. My dual core AMD 4400+ came in a few days ago. Not exactly sure what you're asking, but here's the lowdown on the new system. The chip is paired with an ASUS A8V SLI Deluxe motherboard, a couple a gigs o ram, boot drive (74gig Raptor), 2 WD 160gig Satas in a RAID 0 config, a pron drive, and, well, that's about it. Oh, Nvidia 7800GTX for gaming, and dual 19" LCDs.

i opted for Windows XP 64. Depending on what DAW you're running, you might wanna think about this. It will not work with PT. Just recieved a letter from ilok claiming they are determined to get thier product working under Windows 64 bit code....in the next 5 to 8 months. i have Sonar 5, which has a 64 bit version which should be neat-o . So there'll be some shuttling of wav files from XP to 64 for the forseeable....

Later,

Todd

Hey, I'm after the same configuration as you (Asus A8V Deluxe, AMD 64 4400 X2, 2Gigs of Ram) except I have a Matrox P750 video card (I love it, as I can set it fro dual monitors + TV out for A/V post work, or triple head for music mixing), no ride and I work in Pro Tools LE.

I'm actually using XP Pro, and I guess that I'll stay with that, as PT7 is coming out but doesn't support more than that.
According to Digidesign specs of PT 7 the new DAE is optimized to work with dual core cpus and dual cpu machines...so we should see a great boost in performance, plus the new RTAS engine has been rewritten to be more efficient...another plus.

How do you like your Dual Core system? Is it stable and...FAST?

Thank you

L.G.

Yes, that sounds correct. Utilizing the dual core CPUs, but no mention of Win64. Still, sounds like PT7 could be a winner.

She is steady as a rock. Rock and a half even. Desktop finishes loading in around 40 seconds or so. The last system took about 2 minutes or longer. The RAID control is also insanely quick. PT M-Powered loads in 15 seconds. The demo ( on the old system) took around a minute and a half. Haven't had any real time to check for plug-load on the system. Can't wait 'til 7.0 uses both cores

Judging from all the x2 issues on the uad forum, if you're going with AMD, the ASUS A8V Dlx is the ONLY mobo to get. That's the one uad set up as their test unit. All others will probably not work with the uad-1. Mine doesn't. It's a A8N-SLI. The problem (according to some posters who heard it from the horse's mouth) is the nForce4 chipset-incompatible with the uad.

In fact, the K8T800 which is on the Asus A8V Deluxe is proven to be compatible and rock stable with pro Tools.

Let us know how that machine, XP64, and Sonar 5 work out for you, huh?

I just got S5 but I'll be stuck with XP "32" for a while until I build a new machine. Originally, I was going to bide my time and wait for the next gen, dual core 64 bit Pentium Ms... but that's probably over a year and I'm getting itchy. I've only had one AMD and it was a million years ago (and, by many accounts, a fairly compromised CPU, the old K5 -- and it was really bad and I don't mean good) but I've been impressed with the testimonials from AMD users so I'm thinking about maybe seeing what the grass is like over on the other side of the fence...

[I also haven't used Sonar 5's 64 bit internal audio processing -- though I should have time to fool with that in the next few weeks. I know it won't be quite as efficient running in a 32 bit host, but they say it's not too bad. I'll believe it when I see it -- but I want to believe. ]

What are you Sonar 5 @64 bit users doing for an interface? Dont the interfaces need 64 bit drivers as well? I wrote to Lynx and they said they would not have a 64 bit interface for a while. I heard RME has one already.

A Delta 1010 w/64 bit drivers is hooked up to the box. Have not had time not the desire to test it yet as Sonar 5 still isn't here.
