Why Are Your Still Using Internet Explorer?

Are you a glutton for punishment? Masochist? Pain artist?

Use Mozilla Firefox. Its free, its faster, its way more secure.

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

You can easily transfer all your IE favorites, bookmarks, etc.

Then:

Remove all IE icons from your desktop.

Remove all IE links on the start menu.

Rename the Firefox icon INTERNET so fido doesn't get confused when he tries to log onto pets.com

That is my good deed for the day.

Thanks for the tip.

I just switched my home pc over and it's now browsing as sweetly as my Mac.

Internet Explorer? Was that some sort of Micro$oft web-browser?

Most Mac users I know switched to Safari a long time ago!

Firefox for Windows XP would be better if they would fix this bug

I love Mozilla and use it all the time. I couldn't live without the tabs anymore.
Do u remember when you had ten 10 IEs open when u were browsing around.???...what a chaos that was.

However I have one problem with my Firefox:

It won't play any Quicktime Movies in the browser. It always says "install plugin" which is installed (several times now... )

So I have to open crappy IE to watch them. Anyone else with that problem?

Not to pump up Microsoft unnecessarily but, IE has tabs and is pretty darn secure these days. I get updates every month on plugging security holes. Last year maybe yeah, Mozilla had the edge. But today, they are starting to fall behind and the big gorilla in Redmond is coming back swinging.

The thing I can't stand about IE is its overall look, very boring, all utility and no pazazz.

It is faster. Trust me. You can tweak it too to how you surf to make it even faster as well. I don't even use tabs.

Firefox is the browser i use most. In fact, I also use the Thunderbird mail client. It is a very rare day when Fixefox crashes, and when it does its usually JAVA pooching out not Forefox.

Firefox is more secure and has advanced features like tab browsing (A firefox first I believe). The only downside to Fixfox is that some bank sites dont support it. Oh well, I use IE for a couple specific things.

Ever since Tiger, Safari's been buggy as hell.

Sometimes it quits four or five times before it finally starts.

..........10 IEs open when u were browsing around.....

wow. 10 ies open at the same time? I don't think I'd want that kind of brain overload.

I'll stick with Explorer. There's nothing on my online pc but online garbage. Everything's expendable. IE's not secure? Doesn't matter. I restore my online pc with a Ghost each month anyway just to clean things up and clear out all the accumulated junk that slips through the os/interface/firewalls/antivirus programs etc etc.

The only thing I've ever found that counts for speed in my ten years online is the connection. I'm running Fios. Before that it was dsl. With either of those options, I've got all the speed I need.

I love these evangelists. You can always count on them for some kind of crackpot bs.

There are many good things about FF and some that are a bit irritating and some that are downright 'dangerous' (as in they leave you vulnerable).

I have Mozilla, Firefox, and IE on my machine. I did have Opera, as well, but the version I installed (about 2-3 months ago) was a huge memory leaker. I like aspects of all of them and strongly dislike aspects of all of them.

But -- despite what the fervent FF evangelists will tell you -- Firefox actually has MORE recognized, unfixed vulnerabilities than IE -- almost twice as many as IE as of last week -- and they are being discovered faster than they are being fixed.

They all have problems.

Don't get me wrong -- there's much I admire in Firefox -- and it's great that we have it and that it can provide some meaningful competition to MS -- even if its market penetration has slacked off considerably in the last few months.

Competition is one thing that drives innovation and progress. And when one company rests on their laurels (was that what those things were?) as MS was doing with IE, any kind of competition is extremely valuable.

That said, there is so much BS slung around in some quarters that -- unless you read the actual developer journals -- you may actually be inclined to be suckered into some shamelessly wrongheaded assumptions purveyed by the true believers out there.

african lion safari

safari works great with 10.3.9 here on my macmini and g3/450

I also dumped eudora for the built in OSX mail client... it's surprisingly slick & the iphoto integration is a bonus

Been using outlook and IE for what...nearly 10 years?

When do the problems start happening? Or what am I supposed to be looking out for?

Maybe they already exist and I just have gotten used to them?

What ARE the problems / issues...can someone point me to a list. I have no doubts, I just want to know...I would love increased security.

Gracias.

Well, new vulnerabilities for all the browsers are being discovered all the time, seems like.

You should definitely keep up with your updates for whatever browser you use (and, of course, for your OS).

Many of these potential exploits are fixed before they are found "in the wild" (ie, out there on the net potentially infecting systems). However, some are not and all the major browsers have been 'attacked' at various points.

Obviously, the bigger the user base, the bigger the potential "audience" for the bad guys' handiwork. Just like we musicians (that 'we' sounds funny, but it would appear to be the right pronoun in this use... but I haven't had enough coffee), they like to go where the audiences are. But that doesn't mean that the also rans aren't targetted, too.

That may or may not be true; however, IE has about a 90% marketshare, so if you were searching for a vulnerability why spend the time if it only applies to 8% of the internet users.

What are they going to get anyways? My creditcard number? A waitress taking my card at a resturant is more insecure.

How about for us luddites? I'm still using a dual boot machine, most of the time it is operating 9.2.2 because of the software/hardware stuff I run. (Damn you Korg Oasys!)

Are there options for we who are still in the stone age?

In Firefox browser:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return.
Scroll down and look for the following entries:
network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a
time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once,
which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:
Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30.
This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name
it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This
value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts
on information it receives. If you're using a broadband
connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

----

This tweak is VERY noticeable on a decent broadband connection.
