Blu-Ray

I read that a Blu-Ray disc can store about 25GB of data. I was wondering if we will see Blu-Ray burners being made available for computers. Such storage capacity would be great.

nah BLuray burners are now distributed at large scale and pretty affordable too, most can burn/read dvd's and cd's too, you can find blank blurays at the grocery, still a bit expensive compared to dvd's... for the record "x2" blurays can store 50GB.

2 great 5.25" SATA Blu Ray Burners....

Newegg.com - PLEXTOR Black 12X BD-R 2X BD-RE 16X DVD+R 5X DVD-RAM 8X BD-ROM 4MB Cache SATA Internal Blu-ray Burner Blu-ray Disc Burner Model PX-B940SA SW - Blu-Ray Burners

Newegg.com - LG Black 8X BD-R 2X BD-RE 16X DVD+R 5X DVD-RAM 6X BD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA Internal Blu-ray Burner 8X Blu-ray Burner Model WH08LS20 - Blu-Ray Burners

Media is ultimately bound by capacity... A CD isn't inherently musical and a DVD isn't inherently video-centric

A CD just happens to be the perfect size for 80 minutes of audio

and a DVD happens to fit a full length movie nicely

With 25gb Blu Ray, we'll see large VST's like Omnisphere coming on 2 Blu Ray as opposed to 6 dual layer DVD's

CD's = 0.8GB
DVD = 4.5GB
DL-DVD = 8.5GB
Blu Ray = 25GB

The extra size works great for large capacity hi definition content.
Also we'll start to see software coming on Blu Ray Discs, as well as Blu Ray used for backup and storage...

I blu Ray could theoretically hold over 40 hours of CD quality audio

Would be preferable if a Blu-Ray burner would:

Be able to use Blu-Ray Rewritable Discs
and...
DVD Rewritable Discs
and...
CD Rewritable Discs

That way any format I choose to go with I could use a rewritable disc.

Yours won't write a CD-R disc which is what is most often used to burn audio CD's. So unless the CD player will play a CD-RW disc you're screwed.

hey I just did a copy and past of the specs from the LG website without really cheking, that list is a bit confusing...

The box says it do write CD-RW at 24xZCLV

I'll be honest with you I didnt try to burn a CDRW... but looks like it does it.

It looks like yours is a deactivated item. Plus if it only burns CD-RW discs it's not the best option. I don't think Blu-Ray burners are widely used yet judging from what I've seen so far.

Too bad everything is black nowadays too.

I just did a quick check on Newegg.com and every Bluray burner I looked at also burns and reads CD's and DVD's. Where's the confusion?

Yea I bought it 6 month ago... well considering it can be bought at the mall for less than 200€ I suspect that a lot of ppl are using these actually... BD-R's at the grocery are a sign too.

+ I didnt read you reply properly: it does write CD-R...lol... aswell as BD-R, BD-R DL, BD-RE S/DL, DVD-R, DVD-R DL, DVD-RW (S/DL) and more.

In short it does everything and I assume it's been replaced by the newest version that probably does the same thing but faster for the same price.

Black is fine for me.

My concern was to be able to choose any format and be able to use rewritable discs with them. Plus ordinary CD-R discs too.

I don't think the info that was posted by lpuma is clear at all. It looks like a bunch of techno mumbo-jumbo to me.

However I am not criticising lpuma in any way as I know he just did a copy/paste.
