what would you choose as first piece of out the box equipment

I recently been doing as many mixes as I can out the box because I like the SSL sound from the Duality at my school. Next year I want to start getting some hardware starting with the X-desk. What would yal choose as a first piece of out board gear? a compreessor? EQ? etc.

I don't think the x-desk has compression, so I might look at something like the Presonus ACP-88 which will give you 8 channels of fairly decent compression. You also probably will want some type of reverb. The Yamaha Rev-x is fantastic for $1000. As far as for the front end, I would imagine that the SSL will cover you nicely on the pre's and eq side of things.

God bless and happy new year.
