Logic Express 8 or 9 with an Allen and Heath Zed R16??

I ended up giving my pc to my sister so im now using my macbook for recording. i was between logic and cubase for a while but decided on logic after much debate over the pros and cons. now that THAT is finally over with i still got some deciding to do.

Im only going for logic express because i rarely use plugins and NEVER use softsynths, although space designer does seem tempting.

First of all, i read that logic express doesn't support some hardware mixers. does anyone know if il be able to run my my AnH r16 with it?

Second, i love the new flex tool and varispeed could be useful, but i also run ableton live, so could i just use rewire to run ableton in logic?

I can get logic express 8 for about 140$ CAN cheaper than logic express 9. do the new features justify the extra cash?
